Dramatic irony occurs when the boys come across a dead body of a fighter pilot who ejected from aircraft and landed on the island. The wind blew the parachute and moved the body so it looked like it was alive. Since it was night and they couldn't see, the boys thought that it was the beastie but we knew that it was a dead pilot. Another example of dramatic irony happens at the end of the book when Ralph is being chased by Jack's tribe and a sailor shows up on the beach and says “what have you been doing? Having a war or something?” (201). The sailor thinks that they are playing a game but they are actually hunting Ralph down and trying to kill him. This is ironic because the sailor does not know that they actually are having a war. Situational irony happens when the island is set on fire by Jack. Jack did not care about the signal fire while that's all Ralph wanted. The irony occurs when the fire signals a naval vessel and they get rescued, when they are confronted the sailor says “We saw your smoke” (201).
