He lived in the same apartments as Johnny and when he died Johnny took the book from his apartment. Zampano is suspected to be created by Johnny’s imagination from losing his mind and drug use. He wrote The Navidson Record to match the actions of the hallway. For example, the only word located in the center of a page in the middle of the book is “...changes…” (Danielewski 460). This was when Navidson was crawling through a tiny hole in the hallway when he was in pain. In a way, the novel is changing as the word would suggest. He was brought into the house to do an exploration and try to find an answer, but the hallway didn’t have answers. He eventually lost his mind searching for the growl of the hallway. Within the novel, “Holloway seems drunk as he rushes after the sound...rarely even stopping to rest” (Danielewski 124). The growl of the hallway is not a creature, however, it is the hallway growing and shrinking. Every time the hallway growls, it also changes. Shortly after chasing after the growl, there is a man that shot Jed while in the hallway. It couldn’t be anyone else but
