My life has been full of allies for various things, but my mom, a great ally, was one of the most influential. Though she could not be there to witness it, she was a great help in preparing me for the theater program. She has always helped me prepare for the plays and musicals that I have attempted. Even when I felt shaky about it, she has pushed me to try again and work harder on it. In addition to that, she picks me up every day and allows me to continue doing it, supporting my choices and picking me up if I missed a line, failed to remember instructions, or just feeling down after a rehearsal. I was unsure if I wanted to even do it, and it would be a couple weeks before I decided. When I knew I wanted to do it, I turned to my family for help. Unfortunately, it was the night before the audition at the time, and I was anxious about acquiring any part. Despite this, my mother helped me practice and to make my audition better so that when the time for the audition came, I managed to get in, while another sixty or so were cut from the cast. I have to give my mom credit for that, and without her to help me, I would have taken a much different direction in extracurricular activities and I would not like performing or even try to audition for another one after having my spirit broken. “What? You have to be louder.”
“Fine. A man with an eye patch and a s --” I attempted once more.
She sighed and explained, “No, you’re not enunciating enough. I can barely hear you. Try again.”
“A MAN WITH ... AT,” I half said, half yelled. ”Was that good?” I inquired.
“It could have been better, but it’s a start. Keep working on it, and I’ll hear it again later. Okay?”
“Alright, thanks.” I was pleased that I was starting on my audition, and went back to working on it in order to obtain a good part, and because my mom helped me ready and project it, I made it in with a great part. Looking back now, I realize that without my mom to guide me in honing my skills and practicing for the drama program, I would not be nearly as good of an actor, and probably would have stopped auditioning for it.
