“It's time I thought of myself” is just one on the many selfish comments Windrider makes in the novel Dragonwings by Laurence Yep. His self-centered decisions caused Moonshadow’s dream to be prolonged, but Moonshadow never resents him for it and instead admires him. The entire book is based on Moonshadow’s admiring perspective, so readers don’t see the self-centered side to Moonshadow’s father. Windrider gives into his selfish desires, ultimately disregarding the feelings of others and reversing the roles of father and son.
Moonshadow encourages his father to follow his dreams, but Windrider puts the dreams of others as second priority. Moonshadow commits to Windrider’s dreams, prolonging his own dreams in the process. When Windrider expresses

Moonshadow tells readers about the exhausting work he needs to do by saying “I managed to get a job as a grocer… by the time I got home, cooked dinner, and did my lessons and chores, I would be so tired that I would go straight to bed… Eventually I wound up running our household”(Yep,1975). Moonshadow has to do many of the tiring jobs that his father is obligated to do. Windrider reverses the roles of father and son by pursuing his dreams and indirectly making Moonshadow run the household. Also, Windrider’s dreams take many of Moonshadow’s childhood experiences that he could have had such as proper education and the feeling of freedom. While Windrider is focused on his dream, Moonshadow is anxious about their future lives and income, something his father is supposed to think about. He tells readers that “It did not seem like much of a plan to me...he wanted so badly to fly that it never occurred to him that people may not pay to see him fly. Sometimes people want a thing so much that they lose their common sense...I shut out those worries”(Yep,1975). Moonshadow almost acts as a “guider” for Windrider, worrying about their budget and how they are going to make ends meet. Also, Windrider puts his son’s physical well being at stake because if Windrider failed to make money through his flight shows, Moonshadow may starve or become homeless. Windrider’s self-centered actions made Moonshadow take on a father’s duties, watching over Windrider’s physical health. Even though Moonshadow already watches over Windrider’s physical health, he also takes on the duty of watching over his mental

“A change in behavior begins with a change in the heart,”-Unknown. In the novel the Wednesday Wars, by Gary D. Schmidt, a character named, Mrs. Bigio lothed a young girl named Mai Thi. Mrs. Bigio’s feelings toward the girl changed, when she saw other kids teasing Mai Thi because of where she was from. I think that this change was because Mrs Bigio probably felt a surge of giult and horror rushing through her when she realized how cruel she was being when she saw others being mean, and saw how much it hurt the girl. In the end of the chapter Mai Thi and Mrs. Bigio were comforted by each…

It is depicted as the magical element within a narrative that is full of the rational elements of an ordinary story. For Milkman, the fact that his grandfather could fly represents a release from the reality that he cannot: “…He left everybody down on the ground and he sailed off like a black eagle’” (Morrison 328). Thus, throughout this entire narrative, Milkman has been aspiring towards a metaphorical release of his worldly or rational anxious so that he could be relieved of them. This would result in the figurative ability to flight which has alluded throughout the book in the form of the flying trope.…

Throughout the novel, Krakauer gives the audience an inside perspective to Chris's personality. He does this to prove that Chris is an individual that is determined and adventurous, yet still kind and generous. As he sheds this light on his character, it’s demonstrated that Chris had more to him than the side of criticizing authority, disrespecting his family, and defining societal rules. Chris had a compassionate soul, even from his early years in high school. Krakauer learned from classmate and teammate Eric Hathaway that when his high school pals were attending keggers and sneaking into Georgetown bars, “Mccandless would wander the seedier quarters, chatting with prostitutes and homeless people, buying them meals and suggesting ways to improve their lives.…

In Milkman’s case, while his flight from Michigan frees him from the dead environment of his community, it is also selfish because it causes Hagar to die of heartbreak. Similarly, Solomon’s flight allowed him to escape slavery in Virginia, but it also forced him to abandon his wife and twenty-one children. One of those children, Jake, who is also Milkman’s grandfather, “was the only one Solomon tried to take with him”, but he ended up leaving him behind (323). Because of this, Jake made it clear to his daughter, Pilate, that “You just can't fly on off and leave a body” (147). Pilate, who is Milkman’s aunt, goes on to achieve flight herself, while also staying true to her father's words.…
