In this book Beowulf has many battles that really make or break the text. The first battle that he has is with Grendel. He goes to fight in this battle because he wants to help the people of Herot. His goal is to protect the people and fight for them. He wants to fight Grendel by using just his hands and he does this and eventually kills Grendel by ripping his arm off. This is much more different than the battle where Beowulf fights the dragon. The 50 foot dragon is definitely a match for Beowulf and he chooses this fight for fame and glory instead of trying to protect others. Although Beowulf is still successful in killing the dragon, since the dragon bit him he dies from the poison. He chose a fight for the wrong reasons which ultimately
