Draco Malfoy: Dragons

Decent Essays
I have chosen Draco, or, The dragon, for my essay today. I have chosen Draco because not only of Draco Malfoy, but of how intriguing it is. Draco is one of the 48 constellations listed by Ptolemy. It is circumpolar, meaning it never will set. It is best visible at 21:00 or 9:00 p.m. during July. It belongs to the family of Ursa Major.

The myth of Draco is that of the Titan war with Zues, Athena got attacked by a Dragon. She threw it up into the air, which made the dragon wrap itself around the pole. To this very day and time, the dragon continues to remain in the night sky. Though this is a very legitimate myth, it is not commonly told to society.

A myth that is barely even plausible, is that of the dragon roaming the night skies, searching

I have chosen Cancer as my favorite constellation because it is the sign I was born under. Latin for "crab", it is the dimmest of all the zodiac constellations and used to be the Sun's most northerly position in the sky. It is located in between Gemini (to its west) and Leo(to its east). It is best known among stargazers as home of Praesepe, an open cluster. Cancer is most well known in Greek mythology as the crab sent by the goddess Hera to help the hydra kill Heracles.…

Hydra is the largest constellation recognized by the International Astronomical Union, it stretches from the south end of Caner to in between Libra, Centaurus and the Scales. I like Hydra because even though it is such a huge constellation, there isn't a prominent identifier, but when you do see it, it demands to be admired and you can't forget that it's there. In Chinese astronomy, Hydra contains three constellations within itself; Liu, Xing and Zhang. The myth behind Hydra ties into the myth of Hercules.…

The constellation I chose for this assignment is Columba, also known as "the dove". I chose this constellation because the dove has been a symbol of peace for centuries, and we all need a little more peace in our lives, don't we? Anyway, Columba came into being when Petrus Plancius, the Dutch astronomer, wanted to differentiate loose stars from Canis Major in 1592. The group of stars was meant to represent the dove that brought an olive branch to Noah in the popular Christian Bible story "Noah's Ark".…
