Dr. W's Ell: A Short Story

“But at least I will try,” I replied to my new classmates in Dr. W.’s ELL class, who informed me that she was a real witch and no matter how insistently I would work, it was useless to expect to have anything higher than “C.” Without any hope to convince them, I spent all my time to prepare for English classes, and, to everyone's surprise, after two months I was on the way to a stable “B.”
Right after the New Year vacation Dr. W. decided to give us a test, but, coincidentally, my father was going to have a complicated surgery that day. After taking him to the hospital, my mother and I waited there for 10 hours until he regained consciousness.
When I came home that night, I checked my Schoolnet account and found out that Dr. W. gave me a zero for the missed test, so, my current grade fell down to “F”.
The next day, when I met Dr. W., I asked her about a makeup test. “What was your excuse for missing yesterday’s test?” she asked me sarcastically. “My father had a surgery,” I replied. “It was so convenient to use such sorrowful event as an excuse to miss the test,” Dr. W. resumed. In a desperate attempt to explain away, I said: “Believe me; I could not think of anything else but my father.” “Nothing personal, sweetheart, but in order to have a satisfactory grade in my class, you should have cared only about the test.” Looking at her dazedly, I

Although the situation seemed irredeemable, I decided not to surrender. A few days later I wrote a petition, which listed several cases of Dr. W.’s bias against pupils including me, and asked the administration to replace Dr. W. by another teacher. After I had read the petition to my classmates, I asked them if they would join me in signing it. As I expected, the only words I heard were: “There is no way you will succeed.” “Probably,” I replied. “But at least I will

“You’re not going to feel anything,” the nurse with the fake lips exclaimed. “Yeah, right,” I murmured under my breath as I thought about how many people she had said that to today. Since when do nurses wear more makeup than clowns? Her lips were as thick as my broken, swollen thumb; her eyebrows looked like squirrels above her eyes; she looked worse than a clown. I couldn’t understand how frustrating it might be to mess up and have to start her makeup routine all over; it probably takes her at least two hours.…

Although there are many problems in this case, the main problem is lack of student learning, which needs to be the top priority of a free and appropriate public education, aside from safety, which is always at the forefront. As the principal, I need to reflect on my last 2 years of making an attempt to develop positive and trusting relationships, and my own growth as an educational leader. The problem here is that Principal Hulbert is still at a Level 1 leadership role; where people follow you simply because of your title. This was demonstrated when Bill Osborne, the employee spokesperson, told the principal, “You are the boss and you can force us to revise the lesson plans. Just tell us what you want in the lesson plans, we’ll copy it, and we can go on to more important issues,” (Kowalski, 2012, p.5).…

“Facta-Non-Verba: Deeds not Words,” I read those words online when I researched the fraternity, and was immediately impressed with the meaning that they convey. However, it was not until the information session, where I heard the words aloud, did they really impact me, and caused me to pause in consideration. Some words carry a certain power that causes inflection and reflection when spoken aloud. When I heard the phrase aloud, I honestly felt moved, and inwardly remembered back to when I was in high school where I demonstrated “Facta-Non-Verba.”…

When Mrs. Bruss was here we used to have discussions about book or assignments we had. Mr. Suarez thinks that is to much freedom and instead of having discussion he gives us assignments and tells us to work independently we can’t ask people in our class and we can’t even ask Mr. Suarez for help he is just going to look at us and yell go back to your seat. He has recently instituted a “work to learn program” program which entails manual labor around the school we all have to do it if we want to pass his class because he makes it a performance grade and even if we don’t come to school and we are excused he still counts because he thinks we shouldn’t miss school for anything even if its really important. He doesn’t care I think he takes his jobs way too seriously he is a hardcore teacher that nobody wishes they had and that’s not even the worst part about him. He doesn’t let anybody out of the room even if they are called out of the room or…

Having held a job in the fast food industry for three years I have personally seen the ramifications of not having a valuable college education, I have seen the hardships faced by my co-workers and the drawbacks from not having a college education, and do not want them for myself. I have since moved from fast food to a factory job where I have seen similar trials faced by my co-workers. In my factory job I spend most of my time doing blue collar work, this is not my end goal for a job, and I would like to push my boundaries beyond working as grunt labor. To this end I have diligently saved a large portion of my income to be able to afford a college education. PSEO immensely helps with this because it covers this year’s college expenses for…

Growing up as a 90s baby, my two favorite movies were “Matilda” and “High School High.” They both have great attributes which depict a teacher’s behavior, that there is teacher who really care, and are willing to go above and beyond to help their student in reaching the highest level of success. It also shows that not all teacher is willing to be role models and just doing it for a steady pay check. First let me elaborate on Matilda being that this was kids from the elementary school, was an extraordinary child, very talented kid with an amazing gift called telekinesis (which you use your mind to move things). In my eyes she was just born in the wrong family her parents didn’t care one bit, they never seem to have any form on interest in her…
