Wit, the actress that plays Dr. Vivian Bearing uses another dramatic device. The main character uses metatheatre when she says, “My next line is supposed to be something like this…” This is the character acknowledging, she is an actor in a play or movie. (Nichols, Wit) The film does an excellent job using these dramatic devices to move along the story. The film Wit, directed by Mike Nichols, is an inspiring story of a literature professor named Dr. Vivian Bearing who unfortunately gets diagnosed with terminal cancer. Dr. Bearing has spent her entire life studying metaphysical poetry and the life’s work of John Donne.
(Nichols, Wit) During the film, Vivian is shown in one scene as a young student who is being lectured by her professor on her essay. The professor is say for her essay to be good, she must go out and live. In the film, the professor says, “Don’t go back to the library. Go out. Enjoy yourself with friends.” (Nichols, Wit) Vivian decides go to the library. It is shown that Dr. Bearing believes that living an intellectual life is better than living a life with a lot of friends
