(Nichols, Wit) The film does an excellent job using these dramatic devices to move along the story. The film Wit, directed by Mike Nichols, is an inspiring story of a literature professor named Dr. Vivian Bearing who unfortunately gets diagnosed with terminal cancer. Dr. Bearing has spent her entire life studying metaphysical poetry and the life’s work of John Donne.
(Nichols, Wit) During the film, Vivian is shown in one scene as a young student who is being lectured by her professor on her essay. The professor is say for her essay to be good, she must go out and live. In the film, the professor says, “Don’t go back to the library. Go out. Director Noah Baumbach has had some sort of fascination with Greta Gerwig lately. While his previous film of 2015 didn't feature the actor, three of his last four directorial outings - including this one, Mistress America - have featured her in prominent roles. If you're one of the people who believe that Baumbach is trying desperately to copy Woody Allen, this certainly helps fit that narrative. Allen wasn't - and to some extent still isn't - exactly shy about focusing on one actress over the span of several films. Set in New York - because he's copying Woody Allen, remember - Mistress America follows a college freshman, Tracy (Lola Kirke), who decides to form a friendship with her mother's fiancé’s daughter, Brooke (Greta Gerwig, who co-wrote the screenplay), who is more worldly, eccentric, adventurous, and knowledgeable about things than she is.…

The film allows the rhetor’s to reach a demographic of people that would be much more difficult to reach in the setting of a novel or an alternative medium. The rhetor’s in this rhetorical situation are the writers and stars of the scene, two men who have grown up in the Boston area and have likely witnessed situations similar to the one being portrayed. The audience that the rhetor is trying to reach is young men at certain points in their lives who are utilizing outward hyper- masculinity and a perceived nobility in having little ambition beyond a day to day survival. The message that the rhetor communicates is the pitfalls in the utilization of the hyper-masculinity and perceived nobility as a veil to hide behind as opposed to actually attempting to explore the extent of their abilities. The use of film is an eminent utilization of medium as the audience is able to witness the message as shown through the lives of characters clearly visible and not limited by the imagination of the audience.…

Cooper and Irons do an outstanding job leading us through the story, and a surprisingly essential acting display by Ben Barnes is emotionally gripping as he rides the roller coaster of adversities on which the manuscript is based. The highs of the marriage and birthing of his child, and lows of death of both the child and marriage are filled with cheerfulness then despair. The visual elements of the film are aesthetically pleasing, specifically the grand scenes of the reading in the lecture hall and the professional attire and suave of Hammond. At the same time, the contrast with the simplicity of the post WWII times is refreshing and provides an interesting historical context that connects today with the past. The 1940’s cars and fashion sense transports the viewer backwards and gives a historical scenery to add another layer of…
