Dr. T. J. Eckelberg
In F. Scott Fitzgerald book “The Great Gatsby” there are many odd and significant things or concepts in the book. The ones that stick out were the symbols, and one symbol in particular was Dr. T. J. Eckleburg. Now Dr. T. J. Eckleburg is not a person, but rather a old and worn down billbird with eyeglasses looming over the valley of ashes. Now what is important about this billboard is what the symbol stood for, what it did to people, and when it showed up in the book. The billboard of Dr. T. J. Eckelberg was just looking eyeglasses above the valley of ashes. But thought the book it is seen as a symbol. Dr. T. J. Eckleburg is a symbols of something like God or of a being that sees all. In the book it talks about his persistent stare (p. 24) and how he watches all of the valley of ashes and just how he sees all. In the book, no one is said to really go to church or do anything religious, but they still look up to Dr. T. J. Eckelberg as something that know all and that he sees all. (p. 159-160) Now in the book they were not worshiping

T.J. Eckleburg only shows up a few couple of times in the book, and all these events have something in common. For instance, he shows up before tom takes nick to see his mistress, he shows up before gatsby takes nick to a speakeasy, and he shows up before wilson goes to kill gatzby. Dr. T.J. Eckleburg shows up before something immoral or illegal happens. It is a symbol i the book foreshadowing immoral legend, of just plain bad events are about to occur. A possibility for the reasoning behind Dr. T.J. Eckleburg always showing up before something i'll happens is to show that someone is always watching the actions of others. Lik wit the example of the tennager coming home after curfew. Maybe the parents were out of the house at the time and did not show their kid was out late, but the teeneager knows, the tennager saw. Possibly Dr. T.J. Eckleburg is trying to portray that there is always someone watching and

The placement of the eyes of TJ Eckleburg in the Valley of Ashes brings up the idea of contrasting living of the 1920’s. The 1920’s were notorious for the partying and excessive wealth. This abuse of money led Fitzgerald to criticise the lifestyles of these people. Characters from West and East Egg used their money for parties, while Wilson in the Valley of Ashes lacked money and struggled to survive. These opposites opened up Fitzgerald’s criticism of money and power abuse.…

As he takes in his surroundings in the impoverished strip, Nick notices a billboard of a faceless image of the bespectacled eyes of Doctor. T.J Eckleburg, a retired optometrist. These eyes represent many things at the same time. They are a representation of the eyes of God staring down on and judging the decaying morals of society.…

The eyes of Doctor Eckleburg can mean a lot of things. They can make people feel ashamed for their actions or rethink what they were doing. In my eyes, his eyes are like a reality reminder of what everyone is doing. Not only are they looked at as God’s eyes, but they also have a big impact on the characters in this story. The characters at the eyes and get somewhat of a worried feeling, but they usually just move on.…

Jay Gatsby is the great symbolism of the “American” dream during the 1920s, as the pursuit of one’s happiness and dreams has been degenerated to a chase for fabricated wealth. Gatsby’s devoted love for Daisy motivated him to become this luxurious illusion that stood high upon society; however, by having Gatsby died in his own pool, Fitzgerald exposes the empty and vulgar values that are subjected to the greed of riches. A news article can give headlight to significant events, deciding whether or not the events are worthwhile. If it wasn’t for Gatsby, who centered around Daisy, she would’ve had no value and simply be seen as a young, rich woman with no moral or sense of loyalty. The peculiar eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg may or may not be a…

The sign was a billboard advertising Doctor T. J. Eckleburg, an eye doctor. The billboard was just a picture of two very huge eyes. The sign is right by the Wilsons's gas station that they lived above. The oculist sign was a witness to Tom Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson's affair. The eyes were watching whenever they got onto the train together or drove past.…

The eyes of T. J. Eckleburg loom high above the “valley of ashes,” observing the lives and lies of those around him (Fitzgerald 23). In the absence of God in the “ashes” (23), Eckleburg rises up to take His place as the new moral authority; however, his morals are not based solely upon religion and faith, but rather the booming capitalist economy (Bracken 1). F. Scott Fitzgerald carefully and purposefully wove the ascension of the eyes of T. J. Eckleburg into The Great Gatsby, forcing the characters to feel the weight of Eckleburg’s gaze in their lives. Had Fitzgerald abstained from emphasizing the significance of the eyes, both the characters and the readers would not have realized the mounting supremacy of the billboard. Only being an oculist’s billboard, the eyes of T. J. Eckleburg did not seek idolization.…

The symbols could represent whatever the reader wanted them to although most recognize them as hope. Gatsby uses the green light for hope that one day, he will get the love of his life back, this is Gatsby’s will to live through the rough life he has gone through. “-he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling,...” (Fitzgerald, 20).…

Bad Guys who are Good, Backstories, and Love Triangles: Things that Make a Good Story What makes a good story? All stories have the same elements; a plot, characters, a climax, a theme, but yet some make a reader want to put the book down after the first chapter and others keep the reader up at night trying to finish it. In The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald many symbols are used to support the themes and characters. The Valley of Ashes is a symbol that represents death, poverty, moral decay, and the unattainability of the American Dream. It reveals a lot about the themes, such as the gap between the hollow rich and the hopeless poor, and the characters, like Myrtle and George Wilson’s lives and deaths. The Valley of Ashes was a dumping ground between Long Island, or the East and West Eggs, and New York City. Both neighboring places were lively and full of money, but the Valley of Ashes contradicts that description.…

Eckleburg’s eye doctor business. This billboard is situated in the Valley of Ashes between the “Eggs” and New York. As the story progresses, a few of the book’s characters give insight about the possibilities of what the billboard might represent; the billboard symbolizes God, moral decay, and the death of the American dream. One of the symbols shown through the billboard of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg is God, when the characters of this book behave without thinking about others or regard of what is right or wrong. There is a lack of religion throughout this book- nobody shows interest…

The motif of eyes or eyesight in American literature is important with the idea of perspective. Most times it is seen as a way of enforcing one’s thoughts or opinions on a situation happening within the story. Having one 's eyes represent the reality of this world, or the realization of what is happening helps reinforce the weight of the story. In The Great Gatsby, the eyes of Dr. T.J. They look out of no face, but, instead, from a pair of enormous yellow spectacles which pass over a nonexistent nose” (Fitzgerald 23). Fitzgerald elucidated the eyes on the cover into the book itself, in the form of “the recurring billboard eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg. Scribner, an American publisher, agreed that Fitzgerald used the eyes on the cover as inspiration for the billboard: "I do not know of another case in which an author acknowledges so central a debt to an illustrator" (Runa). While glaring at the billboard of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg, the narrator states, “God knows what you’ve been doing, everything you’ve been doing. You may fool me, but you can’t fool God” (Fitzgerald 159).…
