Throughout the movie, multiple characters showed that they had irrational paranoia towards communists--specifically Russians. Jack Ripper was an extreme case. Holy cow where do I begin? First off, he was so paranoid and anti-communist that he blamed his erectile dysfunction on communists. This is hilarious to me because god forbid he could be the cause of a problem. Back then, ED was seen as a bad thing, meaning that men lost their “manliness” so Ripper basically was insecure as a man so decided to blame communists. The Americans in the War Room showcased this in an amusing way. Even when hearing about the Doomsday Bomb that the U.S.S.R. had, General Buck was shocked and didn’t even think the communists were capable of creating something so powerful. He then commented that he wished Americans had a Doomsday device. This gives insight to the arms race during the Cold War. It’s like America and other countries are little kids they just “want, want, want.” General Buck definitely displayed the childish aspect to America. He pouted when he didn’t get his way from the president and often acted over-dramatic causing a scene. I absolutely loved his character--especially when he complained that the Russian Ambassador would “see the big board”. He thought Americans were the best of the best.
