After watching the video on the speech that Dr. Shackelford gave, I began to reflect on the things that he spoke about. He talked about all the things he went through and how he overcame those obstacles and got to where he is now. Dr. Shackelford moved from city to city constantly as a child and that was an impediment. Since he moved all the time, he never learned all the other things children were learning. For example, he talked about when he was in the 5th grade in Kentucky and his classmates were talking about the history of Kentucky with the teacher and he was clueless because he hadn’t been in Kentucky long enough to learn the history. Not only was this an embarrassment for him, this was also making him get bad grades which eventually led to his mother having to argue with the board of education at his High School so he could take classes to get into college. …show more content…
All his struggles were a reminder to me that no matter what you are facing in life you can get through it and accomplish your dreams, all you need is the will, time, and effort. Dr. Shackleford mentioned that going to college is a big deal, which I totally agree. I am actually the first one in my family to attend college so for me and my family it was a huge accomplishment. Therefore, like Dr. Shackleford, I also want to do the best I can to make my parents proud of me. Unlike High School college isn’t easy, it feels like in High school I didn’t really have to make a big effort and I always made it by, but in college things are different. The classes are harder, you become more independent, and it feels like you never have time for
