Dr. Seuss’s life started out like many others of his time. He was born Theodor “Ted” Seuss Geisel on May 2, 1904 in the city of Springfield Massachusetts, which is where he would grow up. His father, Theodor Robert Geisel, was the son of a German immigrant and owned a brewery before prohibition. After losing his job at the brewery, Theodor Robert took a job as commissioner of parks in Springfield. Seuss’s mother, Henrietta Seuss Geisel, was also the child of a German immigrant, but she worked as a home designer. Theodor had an older sister named Marnie, and a younger sister that died of pneumonia not long after her birth. While growing up in Springfield, Ted most enjoyed going to the zoo. These trips, as well as the general sights and sounds of Springfield, would later serve as inspiration for his writings. Seuss stayed in Springfield until he graduated from Springfield Central High School and left for college in 1921.

While at Dartmouth, Seuss studied English and joined the university’s humor magazine, The Jack-o-Lantern. He eventually became the head editor of the magazine; however, he was forced to resign from his post when he and his friends were caught drinking gin in the middle of prohibition. Nonetheless, Theodor continued sending in stories and comics to the magazine anonymously, or using various pen names, one of which was Seuss. After his graduation from Dartmouth in 1925, Seuss moved on to Oxford University in order to get a PhD in Literature, so he could eventually become a professor. While he was there, he met his future wife Henrietta Marion Palmer. Henrietta convinced Ted to give up being a professor in order to become a cartoonist after she saw some of his doodles. Following Marion’s advice, Theodor dropped out of Oxford in 1927 and moved back to New Jersey in 1927 which is where they would get married and where Seuss would begin his
