Romash’s most recent lesson also hit home when his daughter Manon was diagnosed with cancer. Dealing with such an invasive, degrading disease Dr. Romash was faced with the limitations of medicine. He had to witness his daughter, Manon suffer through two different type of chemo before she tried an experimental chemo treatment which sent her into remission. Now cancer free, Manon is still very limited in the amount of physical activity she can participate in. This gut wrenching feeling of watching someone you love doing everything they can to survive and knowing that there’s a possibility that it still won’t be enough is one of hardest things a person can experience. While Dr. Romash is quick to explain that being an orthopedic surgeon he’s never had to face anything close to the seriousness of life and death, he does face limitations in his practice. Like in my case, Dr. Romash explains “I had tell, you(me), a great hard working kid committed to play a sport she loved at my dream school (Haverford College) that she couldn’t because your body couldn’t hold up, there was no possible way it could. Did I want to? Goodness no, but one must accept the limitations of medicine.” Shattering patient’s hope of returning to how they were before their injury or problem, has been a major obstacle in Dr. Romash’s career. Romash has been one of my most insightful experiences to the professional world. A man of great age, wisdom, and compassion Dr. Romash embodies the definition of a successful and self-actualized man. Between his patent and practicing for over 40 years, Dr. Romash is certainly financially stable. Yet, Dr. Romash continues to practice for the pure enjoyment of helping others heal and move again.
