Will the Real William Shakespeare Please Stand Up?
In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare once said “Tempt not a desperate man” (Romeo and Juliet). This quote relates to the question of the authorship of Shakespeare’s works. Was he desperate enough to take credit for someone else’s work? Many different people including authors such as Mark Twain have doubted his authorship since his death. There are many factors of Shakespeare’s life can prove or disprove his authorship. Shakespeare was not the real author because of his background, varying signatures, amount of work he accomplished, and his lack of acclamation towards his work. His father, John Shakespeare, worked as an alderman and his mother was a daughter of a landowning farmer. Neither of his parents were known to write. It is speculated that he attended school at the King’s New School, a free school for grammar however, there is no attendance records nor any classmates who mentioned him in any found document. The King’s New School mainly taught grammar based upon Latin. Throughout his childhood there was very little documentation of what he did. When he turned 18, he married Anne Hathaway in November, 1582. Six months later they had a daughter, Susanna. Almost two years later he had twins, Hamnet and Judith. Hamnet later died at the age of 11. The relationship between Anne Hathaway and Shakespeare is thought to be somewhat unloving. This is thought because in his will, Shakespeare gave her only his “second best bed”. Also of the times she is mentioned in his literature generally she is mentioned in an unloving way. For most of his life, William Shakespeare was regarded as an actor and a writer. There were two different times of his life that are known as the “lost years” as there is no real idea of what he was doing during these periods. The periods were from when Shakespeare left grammar school until his marriage and then again three years later for 7 years. Most of his career he belonged to the King’s Men acting group from 1564 to 1616. All of his major literature is written past 1590.
