I always had a penchant in assisting people, in middle school I was an assistant to the school nurse. I knew my passion for science and helping others can go hand in hand but I was sure in what professional direction I wanted to until as my passion. I volunteered in hospitals as a way to connect with people while discovering different medical professions. It was not until I shadowed Dr. JW Pitts that I decided I wanted to be a trauma surgeon. Not only did Dr. Pitts made an impact on my life but, he had such a strong impact on the North Birmingham Acipco community. Dr. Pitts is a man of honor and a man of God. He owns Apico medical group which is located in North Birmingham. Acipco Medical Group was once owned by Acipco American factory which is directly alongside the medical center …show more content…
Pitts interact with his patients with care and efficiency. Since most of his patients were geriatric we often treated their entire family some times in one visit. The community valued him, I would hear stories about the amazing community work Dr. Pitts partakes in. Not only did you hear the work Dr. Pitts did for the community from the patients you also heard it from the employees. Dr. Pitts would hold community health fairs, barbecues, and invite community members to his church. He would go above and beyond for his patient, and I believe I can do the same as well. Before shadowing Dr. Pitts I wanted to be a surgeon however, his guidance and teachings lead me into the field of trauma surgery The lessons I learned from Dr. Pitts is something that will be with be forever not just as a doctor but also as a person. Now I a sophomore at UAB majoring in biomedical sciences as a way to hone in my skills in critical sciences. Minor in psychology has allowed me to gain skills to connect with others. Dr. Pitts may not be nationally recognized for his dedication or effort but he is a person that has impacted so many lives especially the young black community. He has given them
