1. The novel begins in Nazca, Peru, in the year 454 BCE, as a mysterious creature commands native Peruvians who worship him to bury themselves alive along with a mysterious object that continuously bleeds without stopping. Then, in the year 2006, Todd Maddox is hired by Richard Ridley to work in his company Manifold Genetics as a researcher of human regeneration, mainly focusing on the Hydra, a mythological creature that Hercules fought during the second of his nine trials. Then, archaeologist Dr. George Pierce, who believes that Europeans had been to America long before Christopher Columbus, discovered a Greek ship in Peru. King then wakes up inside of the now closed tomb, and tries but fails to escape, so he allows himself to asphyxiate. He later wakes up to find that he had been rescued by one of the people who attacked him, named Atahualpa, and discovers that everybody who was at the archeological site, excluding McCabe, was dead, and that Pierce is missing. King calls for help from the rest of the Chess Team, and they all leave their vacations to help him. King follows the attackers down the Rio Urubamba, and eventually camps out, still awaiting the arrival of the rest of the Chess Team. He then wakes up to discover that something inhuman had killed almost every living thing in the surrounding area. As Pierce discovers that he had been kidnapped by Ridley, who hires him to work on the snake head, which turns out to be the Hydra’s head, king discovers a helipad as long as an entire Manifold Genetics facility. After exploring the facility, King gets attacked by a capybara turned savage, which, thanks to regeneration technology, take two .45 caliber bullets shot directly into its head to destroy.
