“It’s hard to still have hope,” Meleny said as she looked at her husband Stephen. It was a gloomy day, the ground was wet and the air moist from the downpour just hours before. The search party was still hunting through debris and deep snow, searching for the small boy who had gone missing days before. The family was still in shock, after their car slid out of control while gliding over a sheet of black ice. Still having flashbacks, Mr. and Mrs. O’Brien would never forget the events of that horrid day. The car had taken a dive over the railing into a mountain of snow, leaving both Mr. and Mrs. O’Brien unconscious. In the backseat, sat young Thomas, his car seat safely secured, crying for his mother and father, who failed to respond.

The first image I saw, and the thing that gave me hope of tomorrow, was the smiling face of Thomas by my side.” Five years old at the time, the two boys were young and had no clue of their surroundings. There was no way out, the cold began to set in, and they eventually figured out they were being held outdoors. All around them were dirt walls and above them a plate of steel. The plate was opened just once a day. Four crackers and a glass of water were sent down to the boys. They didn 't have a way to tell time or the date, so they began making a calendar and a clock on the dirt floor, based on when the steel trap was opened. Hours passed, days passed, months passed, and all the boys had was each other. They talked about their memories and families. As the years passed, the memories became more distant. The boys were struggling to remember their past, while the darkness of their new home was all that filled their mind. They made a pact that when they escaped, they would find their families and make the memories real again. With nowhere to go, the boys started planning their escape, and on the three year anniversary of their separation from their families, they decided to make their move. Each day for a month before, the boys had slowly started digging the sides of the walls out and packing the loose dirt to the floor of the hole. They did this slowly and sneakily, so the person that opened the trap wouldn 't
