What is it like to be stripped from you personal rights and have to act a certain way because of your gender? Many are outrage being stipped what is left of them. Society has taught us to act a certain way because of our gender and it is considered abnormal for acting outside of the norm. According to the article ““Bros Before Hos”: The Guy Code,” by Michael Kimmel, the author states that guys are set to act masculine, acting outside of masculinity are considered “gay”. Throughout the article, the author gives the readers a sense of what is happening in our society.…
In Koppelman’s (2014) book Understanding Human Differences: Multicultural Education for a Diverse America, one chapter specifically deals with the controversial issue of sexuality and its role in this society. Koppelman explains how the idea of homosexuality was typically regarded as immoral and unacceptable. There was a build up of personal discrimination and homophobia based on homosexuality misunderstandings. In recent times however, there has been more acceptance, tolerance, and knowledge of it. Moreover, there has been information on the intricacies concerning sexual orientations—even enforcing policies to encourage equal rights.…
As the years pass by boys seem to become men later and later in life. Through out the book GuyLand, Michael Kimmel examines the multiple reasons he believes boys are getting stuck in this middle ground of “Guy land”. He touches on many topics in an extreme sense in order to get his point about the stigmas of manliness across. It goes into detail on the expectations that modern day boys are expected to abide by in order to reach manhood, or to be considered manly by other boys. It also addresses how this stigma of “being a man” starts as young as the age of three and how it progresses with every year.…
Older role models such as fathers teach their children to act manly and not feminine. Wood discusses in the textbook that boys are taught that to be manly they need to be the opposite of feminine. The expectation of being a male is domination, power, and control. Boys are always afraid to be ashamed of being less than a man if they do not meet this expectation. Young boys are taught to see violence as their last resort but as a solution to their problems.…
An individual behavior can be affected by the environment that they are in. Depending on the environments a person will be affected less more by the stereotype threat set by that certain environment. Making that one individual feel the need to confine with the stereotype set by societies to feel normal and accepted. In chapter five of Steel closet, Anne Balay focus on the different identities gay men identified with within a setting which masculinity plays a big role. The steel production is the ideal american icon and spirit for construction of the nation.…
Heterosexuality is the most orthodox predominant formation of society today. The concept of heterosexuality is socio-culturally constructed and, according to CJ Pascoe, it establishes an irredeemable understanding of masculinity. Pascoe conducts research on socialization revolving around high school students. In this essay, I am going to review how Pascoe’s analysis of the understanding of socialization of masculinity is structured and, more importantly, what she missed.…
masculinity highly plays into this. Like I stated earlier, these men just wanted to show how powerful they were. They didn’t gain anything from this act of hatred. This girl didn’t ask for this to happen, she was forced to cooperate. Toxic masculinity continues to be shown with Stephen Asma’s article “Humiliations and Rage: How Toxic Masculinity Fuels Mass Shooting.”…
The article, “Men, Masculinities, and Feminism” explains that men can be privileged in society but still lose privilege because of certain characteristics that oppress them. The authors, Christopher J. Greig and Barbara A. Pollard (2017) elaborate this explaining that even though men have power based on their gender, their privilege is challenged and ranked within their sex. This can be seen by a social hierarchy that oppresses those who aren’t considered to be as masculine as other Men. Men are pressured by other men to perform actions that are masculine, such as displaying dominance by being aggressive, to secure a higher status. Throughout their life, they are constantly fighting to prove their masculine standing in society so that they…
In order to be accepted into the “perfect” world, the advertising and media world, one must look the part. One must have the perfect curves, perfect posture, and look like a Barbie doll. In Aaron Devor’s article Gender Role Behaviors and Attitudes, it is clearly stated as to what the expectations are in order to achieve the female, and male roles. Gender roles are mainly what this article is about. Here the masculinity and femininity come into play.…
Masculinity is, by definition, qualities and/or the appearance traditionally associated with men, especially strength and aggressiveness. This makes men have to appear to be bellicose or tough to impress society and prove themselves as being ‘manly’ men. Making it very difficult for young men and boys to truly express themselves and let others into their personal lives. Crying, self expression, and asking for help are healthy traits for the growth of young boys and men. Without them, young boys could very potentially not be mentally healthy, and may become hostile and unable to connect to other human beings later on in life.…
This essentially means that for the boys to be able to take the leap of masculinity they have to suppress all the feelings they associate with their mother like being compassionate and dependent and starts being independent and withdrawn. However, this belief often creates lots of problems to boys whose fathers are missing in the picture or the ones whose mothers are over dominant. This is because if being masculine entails disassociating with one’s mother and starting to identify with the father, then what happens when the father is not around. It is true that all kids need a father figure in their lives if they are to make the leap to masculinity, however, being masculine does not really mean that one has to suppress the feelings they associate with their maternal instincts. For instance, Kimmel says that his colleague complained to him that his wife was treating his seven-year-old like a baby by strategizing with her son how to use an alternate route to avoid being bullied.…
Masculinity in The Kite Runner Gender roles have been the perforated lines within our society for centuries, holding us together while simultaneously possessing the ability to tear us apart. We’ve had these ideas of what it means to be masculine and feminine so engrained into our society for such a long period of time that even as we enter a much more progressive era they still seep into the way we raise our children. Traditionally, masculinity can be seen as a combination of three common attributes: strength, honor, and action. Strength is generally referring to emotional toughness and independence, honor to loyalty and generosity, and action to competitiveness and risk-taking.…
265) This caused him to turn to violence against her, because she was the on perpetuating the incident by not letting him feel like a man. According to these factors Peralta and Tuttle concluded that it is clear that “control/domiance was intertwined with traditional constructions of masculinity, namely the inability to achieve hegemonic masculinity which results in violence” (2010, p. 271). These traditional roles also are similar as todays hegemonic masculinity and serves as many of the same gender “rules” such as a man should be tough and now week. Due to these concepts of masculinity Peralta and Tuttle state that men have the choice to adopt or approximate hegemonic masculinity or they can distance themselves from harmful forms of masculinity and expressions, however different factors can be expanded on what role a male choses (2010, p. 270).…
Masculinity is term that is heavily influenced by a society’s cultures and beliefs. Masculinity is also a term that could have multiple definitions depending on the way men are portrayed in certain cultures. Masculinity is defined as a set of attributes, behaviors, and roles generally associated with boys and men. Certain masculine traits include courage, independence, and assertiveness. Men are supposed to be strong, independent and not need help from anyone no matter what the circumstances are.…
In The “New Man” and the Mexican Immigrant Man, Hondagneu-Sotelo and Messner argue that the “new man” are white privileged men and Mexican immigrant men are still seen as traditional sexist men because they do not possess much power in the U.S because they lack spatial mobility or family decision-making. The new man does not exist, but there are men who are performing more housework and are showing their feelings, but many of these men are white privileged males. In the U.S. Mexican immigrant men loose their patriarchy and must act in a macho way to gain their power back and this leads to them being aggressive or sexist. Mexican immigrant men become machos because in the U.S women have more active roles, such as being employed and in Mexico the male…
