“Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'” (Dr. Martin Luther King.) Martin Luther King Jr was born on Tuesday, January 15, 1929 at his family’s home in Atlanta, Georgia. Martin Luther King, Jr. was the second child and first son of Reverend Martin Luther King, Sr. and Alberta Williams King. On the opposite side of the world, in the village of Mvezo, Transkei, Rolihlahla Mandela was born into the clan, the Madibaon, on July 18, 1918 to Nonqaphi Nosekeni and Nkosi Mphakanyiswa Gadla Mandela. In primary school, he earned the name Nelson from his teacher, Miss Mdingane who was in accordance with the tradition of giving all schoolchildren Christian names. At age 39, He was assassinated at the Lorraine Motel Inn when he was on his way to dinner. A bullet struck him in the jaw and severed his spinal cord. After the assassination by James Earl Ray, riots, civil disorder, and controversial wars sparked the nation. Dr. King laid to rest in Atlanta Georgia, Fulton County, at Martin Luther King, Jr. Center. At age 95 , in his home ,surrounded by his family members, Thursday, December 5, 2013, Nelson Mandala lost his battle to prolonged respiratory infection, bronchiectasis. Jacob Suma declared his death to world moments later. South Africa went into a period of mourning. December 15, 2013, the funeral took place and he laid to rest at his family grave plot in his hometown Qunu. “Let freedom reign. The sun never set on so glorious a human achievement.” (Nelson Mandela). Today millions of people are free and entitled to “life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness” appreciation to Dr. Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. What our ancestors have accomplished brought the world into a state of peace. Having the ability to prosper and freely do without limitations in regards to race, is a legacy of legends.
