Today’s kids do not know what it is like to play outside until it is dark, or what it is like to play board games. Children today watch so much television and play so many electronics that it is effecting their weight, grades, and behavior. Which is why Dr. John M. Grohol wrote an article about the bad effects television has on children. The main issue with television and today’s children is that they watch too much of it and parents are not censoring what they watch or play. This article was written to try and shed some light on the subject and inform parents that just sticking your kids in front of the t.v because you need time to do things is not good for your children. So many kids today are overweight or they get bad grades, or even …show more content…
Though many may argue that television is not bad for children to watch, that there are lots of educational programs for them to watch. The truth of it is that too much of television of any kind is a bad thing. Too much television can cause behavioral problems in school which can lead to bad grades, and even poor education in the long run. In Dr. Gohol's article he stated that "14 year olds who watch one or more hours of television a day were at elevated risk for poor homework completion, negative attitudes toward school, poor grades, and long term academic failure"(Grohol, 2009)

In Dr. Gohol's article he states that "there are also studies that show that teens who watch more sexual content on t.v are twice as likely to be involved in a pregnancy." (Gohol, 2009) Sure some may say that having sex education can do the same thing, but when watching anything sexual on television they don’t tell you what is safe and what could happen if you don’t practice safe sex. Parents should be watching what content these children are watching. Children are always very curious and tend to mimic what they see others do. "Human and primate young have a tendency to imitate whoever they observe."(Huesmann, Moise-Titus, Podolski, & Eron, 2003) Weather it be sexual content or violence children will want to try it out. Certain movies and games out there tend to be more violent which can make children who watch or play them act more aggressive toward others. In video games with lots of violence they don’t tend to teach the children it is wrong to use weapons or violence against anyone. Children who learn violence and aggressive behavior early on usually bring that behavior into their adult lives. "Early childhood viewing of violence on t.v was statistically related to their aggressive and anti-social behavior 10 years later."(Huesmann, Moise-Titus, Podolski, & Eron, 2003) Certain games are very violent and use lots of

If they are already aggressive or they have a disorder that makes them more violent then they will be more violent when they play video games that have violence in them. The behaviors created as a result are correlated specifically with anger, but not hostility which orchestrates that video games will not cause violent actions (Thomas). Video games like any other form of media comes with its own set of side effects which could possibly include: short term effects such as an increase in aggressive thoughts, emotions, and an increase in arousal; however long term effects would consist of an increase in availability of aggressive behavior scripts and personality change (Thomas). In life just as there is bad there is also good and that also applies to video games because they have bad side effects like everything else, but they also have a positive side that benefits everyone. An example of this, for instance would be that they help with reflexes, form excellent problem solving skills, and most important of all it allows for parents to bond with their child truly exhibiting how beneficial video games are to society…
