There is a devil on everyone’s shoulder whispering in their ear, telling them to do something they might regret. Some people listen to the devil and engage in the acts he tells them to do. Others have great self control to hold them back from engaging in those acts. Whether the action committed be as simple as lying to parent or as serious as committing murder, everyone has done something bad, everyone has a Jekyll and a Hyde side to them. I know at many points in my life my Hyde side has tried to come out, and has come out. Jekyll in the novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson. I am a lot like Jekyll in many ways. Dr. Jekyll is a kind man who is widely respected in his community. He is also a very curious man who strongly believes that everyone has a good and an evil side. I am a lot like him in many ways. I believe I am a fairly kind person much like Dr. Jekyll but I also have a not so good side to me just like him. Dr. Jekyll wants to do bad things but he has repressed all of those thoughts because they might interfere with his job and his friends could find out and think bad of him. At the end of the novel is says “I bring the life of that unhappy Henry Jekyll to an end (54).” Jekyll is unhappy being himself so he is going to permanently be Hyde, he loves doing the bad things that he does. Some of the questionable things that I have done I also quite enjoy but i have never done anything extremely horrible like Hyde has. Although I have done some bad things in my life, my personality is really nothing like Hyde’s, it’s more like Dr. Jekyll's. People keep their Hyde side in check different ways. In the novel Jekyll has set up his own precautions for when his Hyde side comes out. He has created a potion to turn him back into his good side. One morning in the novel he woke up as Hyde unexpectedly which was not good so he needed his potion “all my drugs were in the cabinet (47)”. All of Dr. Jekyll's potions were in the cabinet downstairs and he needed to get them to turn himself back into his normal good self. Not every person has a potion to keep themselves from being too bad. For some, their parents keep their child’s Hyde side in check for them, others have enough of a conscience to tell them right from wrong. For me. I usually find it very easy to keep my rebellious side in check. My life usually does it for me. With parties, I have always wanted to go to one but since I have never had the opportunity to go to one I’ve never had to worry about doing anything I would regret. I have had a few opportunities to do drugs but every one of those opportunities, I called off because I had something more important to do. I was fairly certain I was going to go but last minute I had to cancel. One of the times I was going to go out and smoke, I set many precautions for myself so I wouldn't get caught. My friend and I were going to go out and smoke some weed, everyone knows weed has a very distinct smell so I had a plan to cover it up before I went home.
