St John
“I woke up with a cold feeling going down my back. It was as if the life was drained out of the house. I walked through the lifeless hallways until I found my way to Jane’s room. It was empty and barren. All of her possessions weren’t there anymore. I felt a bit of joy enter my heart as well as a bit of anger. There were two possible explanations that would tell me what is happening at that very moment. I felt pain grow in my head as the stress grew. I stumbled down the stairs to find Diane and Mary in the dining room.
After a very quick conversation that was had with Diane I felt my heart sink knowing that the worst had come to be. Jane had left to be with Rochester. She chose the old, ugly man over me the handsome, charming man.

To feel alone, completely, and utterly alone, can be a crushing sensation. It can destroy a person from the inside out, and drive them completely mad. And if you couple that with being confined, you have a formula that can only conclude in disaster. In The Painted Door, through Ann, we see that when one feels neglected, trapped, and alone, it can drive a person to do things outside of their normal behavior. And if one gives into cravings, consequences that may not have been imagined could be brought to fruition.…

It was a gray day. The sun did not shine; it could not sever the layers of powdery black skies and the fog. The thick mist that was not really rain and not really fog covered the southeastern corner of New Jersey. It was depressing, just like most days in the area surrounding the Overbrook Asylum. On the outside, Overbrook was a welcoming place where patients were treated with care and respect; the inside was very different.…

Julius Caesar once said “It is easier to find men who will volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience.” Pain is an extreme emotion that we all experience on a quite frequent basis. It is so extreme in fact, anyone who truly endured the deepest of pains would likely agree that even death, a void that contains absolutely no emotion, would be more preferable. Pain weighs down on our souls, blurs the sight of our world, and stops the production that could occur in the absence of it.…

“I'm so sorry, Margaret,” I said, extending my arms so the pie’s warmth and smell floated below her nose. “I know it’s not enough, but I hope it’s worth something.” I imagined Margaret thinking of all the hours I spent comforting her until she was strong enough to move on with her life. She had to forgive me, I thought, because friendship couldn’t expire from actions that weren’t even mine. She only blinked, as if I hadn't said a word.…

To Beatrice--so radically had her earthly part been wrought upon by Rappaccini's skill--as poison had been life, so the powerful antidote was death. And thus the poor victim of man's ingenuity and of thwarted nature, and of the fatality that attends all such efforts of perverted wisdom, perished there, at the feet of her father and Giovanni. Just at that moment, the purple blossoms of Beatrice’s sister withered in the midst of the pool. Distraught from this depressing scene, Rappaccini nearly fainted. Horror pierced his heart, and the Doctor fell onto his knees reaching for his chest--the source of the pale, ripened man’s pain.…

Barbara Capitelli was shaking, not noticeably, but shaking inside for her feelings were exceptionally strong and vivid. She wanted to get away from Barbara and the only way she could at this moment was to think of someone else’s words of wisdom. “The whisper of solemn finality, the mention of death of a loved one is a deep moment of regret that takes control and squeezes you till the tiny drops of remorse have no place to hide. Within James Joyce’s collection of short stories Dubliners, the final story is called “The Dead.” This story serves as a conclusion to all of the continual themes and plot devices found throughout the collection. With a modernist lens applied, the main protagonist, Gabriel Conroy is seen to replicate many themes found in modernist literature. Throughout this short story, James Joyce uses this main protagonist to portray modernist themes of alienation, stream of consciousness, and epiphany by accounting events in which the character finds himself alone and lost in a setting that should be otherwise favorable. Early on at the dance party is when it is seen that Gabriel Conroy first alienates himself from the other characters in the story.…
