Dr. J. Douglas Muir and his older sister were raised by their parents in a somewhat rural community in Arkansas. Growing up, he enjoyed ornithology and science. Doug graduated from the University of Arkansas with a B.S. in Zoology. Following graduation, he worked as a phlebotomist at a VA clinic in the psych ward and discovered he really enjoyed listening to patients. At that point, he decided to pursue a career in medicine. After completing the necessary tests, Doug was accepted into University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), where he received his M.D. in 2006. During his medical residency rotations, he again spent time working in a VA psych ward. It was at that time, he decided to pursue psychiatry.

Muir says that Planetree means improving the quality of care for patients. Additionally, Planetree means holistically including all levels of care (spiritual, mental, etc.), while emphasizing what truly matters to patients. Furthermore, it is truly being patient-centered by listening to what patients need and want, as opposed to just telling them “this is how it is”. Doug believes the Planetree philosophy also means listening to staff. He values how North Valley Hospital’s leadership really listens to staff, while not showing partiality based on title or department.
Dr. Muir brings the Planetree philosophy into his daily life and work by treating his patients holistically, talking with them about all aspects of health. In addition to therapy and administering meds, Doug discusses nutrition, spirituality, aerobic exercise, etc. He encourages his patients to be active and significant participants in decision making regarding their care. Doug also values his staff and encourages everyone to provide input. He sees them as a team, where everyone has a

In April the patient set up a preoperative examination with Dr. Becton. She claims that there was a nurse in the room for the pat smear. The nurse and Dr. Becton left the room as the woman was getting undressed. Dr. Becton returned but without the nurse (which it isn't against the law to have a nurse in there but according to Linda Hutchison that pretty much every doctor had a nurse present during the exams.). Then he told her to lie down on the table.…

Describe your particular interest in attending UNE COM and any contact you have had with UNE COM students, alumni, faculty or clinicians, admissions counselors, student affairs staff, etc. How did these interactions influence your decision to apply? The University of New England College of Medicine has an interesting curriculum that is centered around the patient in order to treat the mind, body and spirit. This curriculum is appealing to me because not every patient symptomatology follows the textbooks and it is vital to learn with a patient focused curriculum and through the use of case studies. In addition to the curriculum, the University of New England provides a unique environment to learn and practice medicine through the use…

A human’s cognitive ability is unlike any other animal on the earth. Compared to other animals, the human brain possesses more neurons and synapses, tallying eighty-six billion and one hundred fifty trillion respectively. The wiring of the brain and its connections are responsible for human’s superior cognition. Thus, the reason neuroscientists pursue research of neural connections is obvious; neural connections are the fundamental basis of individual expression. Many famous neuroscientists, each with their own twist, are currently working to map the trillions of connections within the brain.…

I worked my way up the medical professional chain from my emergency medical technician (EMT) certification, registered dental assistant, x-ray technician, surgical technician, medical administrator of insurance billing and surgery scheduling, to an insurance agent of life and health, disability and long term care.…

However, my familiarity with the details of medicine expanded at age 15 when I began to volunteer at the C.A.R.E. Clinic, which provides medical care for the uninsured. In college, I explored medicine by volunteering in the emergency department at Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota in St. Paul and participated in a Global Medical Brigades trip to rural Honduras.…
