Dr. Frances Williams Personal Statement

Studying medicine is not something that I wanted to do something that I wanted to do since my childhood, but is something that attracted me when I read "Human Body," by Dr. Frances Williams. What is the human body? How does it get sick? How does it recover itself? What helps it to recover? All of these questions came to my mind when I read just the first chapter of the book. I have enjoyed the chance of exploring the human body in year 11, from the number of bones in the human body, to understanding a baby’s growth in its mother's womb. I have developed my understanding about the subject, by doing extra - curricular activities such as reading articles in "Toronto Star" about three dangerous antibiotic-resistant superbugs and watching documentaries related to bacteria and viruses. Due to tough competition, I could not volunteer at that hospital. One failure did not diminish my enthusiasm for exploring medicine. I am re-applying in different public hospitals for the upcoming winter break (2015). Meanwhile, I joined Biology club at my school. Joining the club has increased my understanding about the subject and has showed me a new perspective of the human body. It made me realize the importance of teamwork. It has showed me that through teamwork, one can achieve the un-achievable. I also learned to apply my scientific knowledge to new concepts, from drawing punnet squares, to performing microscopic calculations and extracting DNA of an onion and analyzing it.
