Thinking that study of philosophy, medicine, law and theology is a waste of time, Doctor Faustus wants to challenge himself with something more than just these kinds of things. He decides to study magic, because he thinks that from magic he will have all kinds of goodies, like power, wealth and will get answers for things that he has doubts. Later after he comes back to Germany he continues to make some other tricks by conjuring up Alexander the Great, Helen of Troy etc. With other words all of this trick are unimportant comparing to value of his contract with the devil where he has sold his soul to devil.

Mephistopheles for the first time in the play appears after Doctor Faustus’s request, and he tells Doctor Faustus that he can be his servant only if Lucifer, the commander of the devils, agrees about it. The second time that Mephistopheles appears in the play is when he brings words that Lucifer has agreed about Doctor Faustus’s proposal if he signs the contract where he says that he will sell his soul to devil if Mephistopheles will serve to him for twenty-four years.
