The Bible Story Of Esther And Veggie Tales

A myth is a traditional story that has collective importance. Collective importance is when the morals or lessons of the myth apply to more than one person. For example, a myth discussing the importance of integrity applies to, not just one person, but a collective group of people. There are three kinds of myths: divine, which deals with gods and goddesses as the main characters; legends, which have human heroes as the main characters; and folktales, which have ordinary people, or talking animals as the main characters. The myth I picked was the Bible story of Esther. I first heard this story in Sunday school, when I was a child. We read the story, then watched the Veggie Tales movie during snack time. I remembered this story because of the Veggie Tale movie, which provided a childlike aspect to the story. The movie reenacts the story but vegetables instead of people, who could forget that? The Bible story of Esther would be classified as a legend. Esther was a young Jewish girl who was adopted by her cousin Mordecai, who was also Jewish. These two …show more content…
There always have been and always will be groups of peoples that are being persecuted. One big similarity between Esther and the peoples being persecuted is that someone needs to stand up if anything is going to change. A more recent example would be the Civil Rights Movement. To make a change, Martin Luther King Jr. needed to stand up to make a change, just as Esther did. The stereotype found in the story is that a woman cannot do anything for herself; that she needs a man. Esther proves this wrong when she stands up for herself and her people against Haman. The more current example of this is the woman, Malala. She stood up for her people, breaking the stereotype that women cannot do anything for themselves. These aspects and stereotypes, almost always found in myths, are found in society today

In the Greek book, Esther is a symbolic object. She aids in the freedom of the Hebrews, but the author chose to follow Mordecai’s story as a prophet and standing against Haman. Instead of standing in behind the scenes in the Hebrew version, Mordecai uses Esther’s positions as the king’s favorite to persuade the king to accept any of her requests. Esther still asks the same desires as in the Hebrew book, but the author of the Greek book puts much more detail into it, changing the scenario and the perspective on Esther because of the addition of the Lord. In the Greek version for example, when Esther approaches the king and is prepared to propose her request, the author describes how terrifying he is and Esther faints from fear.…

Since the gates are where legal and justifiable acts occur, Mordecai’s action to prevent the assassination suggests to the reader the author’s needs to the king to be alive for the saving of Jewish people to occur. Mordecai over hears this news at the gates, and tells Esther who then informs King Ahasuerus. Being around the gates allows Mordechai to gain the king’s favor.…
