Dr. Darren Ranco Speech Analysis

The presentation I attended was about Sustaining Native American Wabanaki Basket-Making Traditions by Dr. Darren Ranco. He actually experienced the basket making in native America, which is why he chose to speak about it. Based on his presentation, his intended audience was probably most anyone. He stated in his speech that it could be for anyone just a little interested to give it a try to look into it. To begin, the speech started off very well, he did not show all of the parts needed for a speech. Such as, the preview statement and relevance. However, I do see how it can be hard to make this topic very relevant, especially to students. The body of the speech was put together pretty well. He used very clear and effective transitions throughout his speech. His conclusion came to us so quickly that it was not impactful of his speech. I felt that he could have done so much more to end his speech. He did not present a review statement as needed nor did he impact us at the end. In addition to the body part of the speech, the cites and evidence were important also. Instead of speaking of each work separately, Ranco had a few slides of many different works cited. This I felt was not professional or at all the right way to do this, because the powerpoint should not have been used to cite his works that he found, …show more content…
He had great extemporaneous speech and casual talk, however, he was not able to move around and show gestures through his presentation. The visual aids used in Ranco’s speech were great and informative, however, there were too many and he used them the wrong way. Instead of using the pictures to help him describe the scene or event, he just showed it most times and let it describe itself. This defeats the purpose of images shown in a powerpoint, you always want to use them to talk more. Also, he had very crowded and obnoxious slides, the pictures were pushed together and hard to

In the speech, Phil Davison uses the fourth canon of Rhetoric (Delivery) clearly. He started the speech with good loud volume. He addressed his audiences clearly and introduced himself in a bold manner. He filled the room with his strong voice and covered the room. He spoke clear and simple in order for the audience to understand him well. Additionally, one way he persuaded his audience was by using emotion (pathos) aside from logic (logos). His voice did not stutter at all and he did not make the speech sound choppy and rushed because he used his sentence lengths precisely. Nixon’s speech was propriety meaning that he spoke about the right thing at the right place at the right time. Speaking about this, it was great that he came up and stood up for himself which shows bravery in front of the television and broadcasts.…

Andrew avoided over filing each slide with words, he only had a sentence or two and then expanded on the topic which is what we have been taught to do. Also he included a lot of pictures which helped his audience understand and see first hand what product he was talking about. Andrew also brought two ULine catalogs with him. The catalogs he passed around were examples of the ones ULine sends out to companies/customers several times each year. I looked through the thousands of products that they had available and found it very astonishing that Andrew was in charge of all of those products.…

Another strategy that B. Lotto used was that he implemented part of the rhetorical triangle in his speech, the figure that he mostly used is ethos, it can be observed when he refers to Barkley and also when he said “in my laboratory we…”. He implemented this type of rhetoric figure because as he mentioned these facts, he obtained more credibility from his audience and therefore, it will seem that he was fully prepared for his presentation. Beau Lotto did an excellent presentation not only because he used all the strategies mentioned before, but because he also selected a topic that was well developed for his main audience. It can be observed that he took into consideration all elements like location, occasion and audience size when he started involving more his audience in his speech, if he stood up there and started to talk without the use of visual aids or other props, his audience may have felt bored and maybe his main idea will not reach the people the way he wanted…

In his conclusion he emphasized that he had a massive amount of people voting for him; therefore everyone in the audience should as well. This fallacy is effective on many people but not logical. Throughout the speech he talks about why America needs a perfect union then ends it by asking for a vote in the election. The President’s attention getter and call to action were incredibly effective but it would not have been such a well-written speech if it…

He also used a lot of repetition, such as "I have a dream", which highlighted his theme. He also used gestures and emphasis on individual words to highlight his speech. At the end of the speech, he said a slogan, which aroused the attention and resonance of all the audience and pushed the atmosphere of the speech to the highest point. The weakness of the speech: In the first half of the speech, he lacked eye contact with the audience, and most of the time…

Rhetorical Analysis: The Danger of Science Denial It is important to appreciate the current nature and status of the world because there are individuals who laid the appropriate foundation for it. As Michael Specter’s TED Talk on The Danger of Science Denial, he outlined the challenges that might emanate from science denial. There are reasons that ought to be checked critically since they affect the current and future generation and they include health, wealth, mobility, opportunity and declining rates of diseases. I think that his intentions with the speech are to clarify and, like I said earlier, to motivate the audience, and make them believe that they can do it, if they work for it. In the end he says, “people don’t expect the government to solve all their problems”, so he talks on behalf of them, which makes them unite and unconsciously agree with him. In that way I think his intentions worked pretty well, and that people really did feel inspired, because he related to them with his story, like I know I…

Her word choice was carefully picked, precise and clean. Her tone was a calm yet persistent one where one could see how subtle but also determined she was on her work. She would pause just enough to make a clean speech, she didn’t hurry off or seemed nervous in any way which only interested the audience into paying attention to her. However, one may think that she would have an even more effective speech if she would of played with her voice a little more or do some sort of hand gestures. If she would have changed her voice into a stronger one she maybe could have expressed some strong feeling that wasn’t empathy or remorse.…
