Dream big, have faith, and be determined that nothing will get in your way of being successful is the message from the book “Gifted Hands” by Dr. BenCarson and Cecil Murphey. Though he faced many obstacles, he never lost sight of his goals. Few inspired him, but his mother, Sonya, was his biggest influence in his life. Dr. Carson’s success was not easy, or without adversity, and he had to overcome many obstacles to become the most famous, respected, and talented pediatric neurosurgeon of his time. Dr. Carson’s story begins in Detroit Michigan where him and his brother, Curtis, live with their mother because their father left when Carson was only eight years old. When he was 11, he realized that they were happier without their dad …show more content…
Such as a time when he was in ninth grade. He had an argument with his friend Bob. With his terrible temper acting up here and there, he pulled out his camping knife and aimed at Bob’s stomach, but it hit his belt buckle instead. The fact that he almost killed his friend caused him to be embarrassed for doing such a careless act. He locked himself in the bathroom and asked God to take away his terrible temper that would keep him from being successful. He read from the book of Proverbs 16:32, “He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he who rules his spirit than he who takes a city.” That line affected him deeply, and he felt cured of his bad temper. Another turning point in Dr. Carson’s life was about the 11th grade when he realized he wasn’t dumb and decided to get serious about his education and future. During both 11th and 12th grades, he ranked among the A students again due to his mother encouraging him and making him understand that he was in control of what happened in his life. He decided to become someone who helped people, a doctor. Ben was even given a scholarship to West Point but turned it down because he knew he wanted to be a doctor. He decided to go to Yale, but it ended up being hard on him, and he started to fail chemistry and if that happened he wouldn’t be able to fulfill his dream and be a doctor. A miracle happened in a dream that Ben had, and he ended up scoring a 97, and he was a …show more content…
Carson became the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. His specialty is hemispherectomies. His biggest task was separating conjoined Siamese twins that connected at the back of the head. Carson performed the surgery which did include him having to cut the Twins’ converging veins. The worst part of the surgery was when the twins began bleeding at a deadly rate. Thankfully the surgery was a success, and the twins turned out fine. That was the first time this surgery was completed successfully. Dr. Carson, overcoming many obstacles in his life, also had many happy moments as well. Marrying his girlfriend Candy, whom he met at Yale, was one of those moments. Performing difficult surgeries and being successful with them was another example. As Dr. Carson states,
“Success is determined not by whether or not you face obstacles, but by your reaction to them. And if you look at these obstacles as a containing fence, they become your excuse for failure. If you look at them as a hurdle, each one strengthens you for the next.” He definitely has “gifted hands”, a gift from God. Dr. Carson is an excellent role model for all young children. He has shown that it is possible for a poor person from the ghetto, in a broken home to make it and become successful. All anyone has to do is believe in God and believe in themselves, and anything becomes
