There are multiple ways in which the film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is Expressionistic by nature. One of the biggest ways the Expressionistic qualities shine through is in the set design. The three designers, Hermann Warm, Walter Reimann, and Walter Röhrig, really brought the bulk of the Expressionist style into the movie. The apex of the Expressionistic style in the flip is reached at the end of the film where it turns out the narrator is actually the madman. Showing all the more clearly how the entire narration of the film took place in the distorted mind of the madman. The projection of is inner thoughts into physical and visual reality is Expressionism at its core. Which makes the movie itself a perfect example of early Expressionism
