A genetic disorder is a condition that is caused by an absent, an inactive gene or by a chromosomal abnormality (Dictionary, 2016). Down’s syndrome is caused by an extra chromosome 21 in the genome in an individual. The extra chromosome causes moderate intellectual disability. The extra chromosome can also result in an error in cell division. The error is usually prior to fertilization but for some reason nobody understands what causes theses errors. People with Down’s syndrome have 50% more genetic material on the 21st chromosome than people who do not have Down’s syndrome (Jerome Lejeune Foundation USA, 2013). Scientists have long known that the defects in …show more content…
He published the book in 1866, which earned him the title as the “father” of Down’s syndrome. As the advancement of medicine and science continued so did the study of Down’s syndrome. In 1959, the French physician Jérôme Lejeune found out that Down syndrome was a chromosomal condition. She saw that there were 47 chromosomal cells instead of 46 chromosomes. Later, it was discovered that an extra copy of the 21st chromosome was the cause of Down’s syndrome. In 2000 a group of well- known scientist identified and catalogued each 329 chromosomes in the chromosome 21. This helped open the door to better understand Down’s syndrome (National Down syndrome Society, …show more content…
This syndrome makes the person have cognitive delays, from mild to server. Most people with DS have mild to moderate retardation. Due to technology increasing and improving people who have Down’s syndrome have been living longer than ever before. Children with Down’s syndrome in 1910 were only expected to live until they reach age nine. In today’s society with the help of antibiotics the new survival age are either 19 or 20. Now people with Down’s syndrome can get corrective heart surgeries, 80% of adults with Down’s syndrome reach age 60 and may live longer (National Down syndrome Society, 2012). We currently do not have a cure for Down’s syndrome. Our scientist is still searching for a way to reverse the chromosomal genetic disorder. Scientist has ways to help them live longer and hopefully one day they will have a way to help correct this
