It is a common (and one would consider normal) sight in most American preschools or day cares, a little girl will be playing with her baby doll, rocking it and crooning lullabies, while a few feet away from her a little boy is waging an epic battle with his toy solider. The concept of nature versus nurture is a question that has plagued sociologists and psychologists for centuries, what causes a person to act a particular way? Sex influences how society expects a person to behave and think, in accordance to what gender role the person is expected to fulfill. These social expectations permeate into every aspect of a person’s life, from what color a baby is to be enshrouded in (pink for a girl or blue for a boy) when they are born to how an adult is expected to respond to an obstacle or conflict. Brands like Degree and Secret have become adept at identifying and…

The standard way of thinking about packaging is that it is just a wrapper around an item. Contrary to the standard way of thinking, Thomas Hine believes that packaging reflects one’s lifestyle and values. In his essay “What’s In A Package”, he explains the complicated process of creating consumer packaging, which appeals to the consumer on a subconscious level. Because of this, consumers can realize the abundance of packages, the minute details that go into them, and how packaging can make or break sales. In this essay, I will be analyzing the minor details in the packaging of Caress Body Wash: Tahitian Renewal, AXE Harmony Body Wash, EcoSmart Instant Repellent, and Prince of Peace Ginger Candy to show the importance of packaging.…

However, the idea of identity is not necessarily synonymous with race; it can also deal with gender. In her work “ ‘A Dubious Equality’: Men, Women and Cosmetic Surgery,” Kathy Davis examines how men who seek plastic surgery are affected by concepts of masculinity, and how it can affect their surgeries.
