Doug's Day Analysis

Statement of Intent. In my story, I wanted to write about an individual with unresolved issues which were dragging them down and had shaped who they were. In this case I wanted to underline how Doug’s mother’s absence had affected him and how much stronger he could be after dealing with her as a barrier. The reason I made the characters animals was an experiment and it enabled me to reinforce the character’s personality type without further description. The animal choice is more of a metaphor for the character’s personality more than anything and I felt little need to go over the top with animal related jargon as I wanted the reader to see the characters as people first. I decided to make both of Doug’s parent’s dogs. This is despite the fact that his mother didn’t encompass the loyalties thought to be associated with dogs. I did this purely to not distract the readers with questions about the logistics of Doug’s birth. Doug’s Day Doug woke up. His large brown eyes looked his bone shaped alarm clock. It’ll ring in 30 seconds he thought to himself. He stood up and proceeded to carry out his morning rituals perfunctorily. His teeth, his toast then his tie. Doug knew this is the kind of place where people spend their whole lives and never amount to anything beyond a company granted lifetime achievement award. Doug’s office was laid out like chicken wire. Little hexagons of space with wires of hallways, pumped with animals going from place to place, the veins of one very sad system.
