By the age of twelve Douglas was six feet tall and didn't stop growing until he reached 6’5”. To Adam’s form-master (Frank Halford) he didn't seem special at all, he said that he had seen multiple other students in Adam’s shoes that looked just the same, but Adam’s ability to write great stories is that really made him stand out in a class full of students. Adams showed such great writing skills that he was the only person that was ever given a ten out of ten by Halford for creative writing. Some of his very first literal pieces were created and published at his school, for an exam he reported on the photography club in his school newspaper as well as created spoof reviews in the school's magazine. His first publishment was a letter and short story that could be found nationally in The Eagles boys comic in 1965. After the first episode of A Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy was a success Adams was made a BBC radio producer working on Week Ending and Black Cinderella Two Goes East. Adams then left 6 months later due to a job offer for script editor of Doctor Who. According to Adams the idea of what some people may call this best work A Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy came to him while he was drunk laying in a field with a book titled A Hitchhiker's Guide To Europe looking at the stars. He then later said that the repetition of his anecdote had ruined his memory of the event. Although Adams had created an outline for this series it was said that Adams made up the stories as he wrote them. While working on multiple different things such as his radio series and simultaneous projects Adams had problems with maintaining deadlines. Although Douglas was never a prolific writer and usually had to be forced to write this problem specifically arouse once he started writing the Hitchhiker’s Guide’s novels. There are reports of Adams having to be locked inside a hotel room with his editor for large amounts of time to meet certain deadlines. In the 1980s, Douglas decided to make his first hitchhiker’s guide novel into a moving making several trips back and forth to Los angeles working with multiple studios and producers in order to get this accomplished.
