Doug Dietz: Video Analysis

Improved Essays
In the video by Doug Dietz, we see a problem most people overlook being seen and fixed because of one thing: empathy.
Doug showed empathy to the family that came to get an MRI scan in the Scanner he designed, so he was able to feel the anxiety and stress faced by the parents and the children. They are the ones the hospital would use the machine on. Hence it is their satisfaction that is important to him. As a designer, I know that a designer feels the most satisfaction when their design serves its purpose in the best way it can and touches the lives of others in the process.
He was able to identify a major flaw in the design of the MRI scanner: Children were afraid of it! How are the doctors supposed to take the MRI if the child is unwilling to enter the scanner? Say they decide to sedate the child, it may help them to conduct the scan, but it also increases the risk of the child facing dangers. A drug overdose can cause serious problems. The parents have to carry the children and their concentration gets affected. This can cause impaired judgement and can lead to accidents if they are driving, only making the situation worse.

He does this because he accepts that interior designing and children are not his forte, and realizes he needs help to solve his problem. The root cause of all the problems is that the environment and the design of the scanner scares children, so the best way to convince children is to get rid of their fear. Children have a wild imagination and can make worlds if you just give them enough Lego blocks. He redesigned the room and the MRI Scanner so that they look like places that are interesting to children and excite their imagination in a positive

I really enjoyed watching the video. The purpose of John Sinnett 's was that he wanted his students to see that he was engaged just as the students were. From the video, we can see that John is very passionate about his kindergarten students. During his lesson, he gets down on the carpet on the same level as his student to make them feel engaged. This is something that is very important because students are so to teachers telling what to do.…

In the video, Hita describes that she never doubted she was a girl and is glad that she did not have surgery to determine what sex she is. She had a desire to discover herself and found that out from a newspaper article about intersexuals. Hita was popular, athletic, and happy growing up. She disagrees with performing surgery on a newborn baby. Furthermore, I believe that the physician should allow individuals to select their sex when they are old enough.…

    Overkill Gawande Summary

Overkill, is an article which seems to be a follow-up of a prior article, written about medical care, health cost and doctors possible immoral motivation towards patient care. Stating that “Doctors get paid, for doing more not less” (Gawande, A. p. 6), which led to things such as over testing, over diagnosis and over treatment. The author of the article discusses these miss happenings and amidst that he seems to be pretty consistent in talking about a particular patient Mrs. E. Which, leads me to believe that though he is talking about doctors, in terms of them turning into businessman over care givers, of health cost as being so high that every household feels an impact but he seems to be consistent in also mentioning that it is not just the doctors but it is up to the patient as well to be informed and interactive in the questioning on procedures and tests.…

My experiences over the last six years living in NYC have shaped me into the approachable and compassionate person I am today. I have been immersed in a melting pot with many different culturally and economically diverse populations. These unique experiences have broadened my horizons and allowed me to gain valuable communication skills and the ability to connect with people from all walks of life. I searched out opportunities to give back and help the people in my community both in volunteering in hospitals, educating high school students, and interning in private practices. I even traveled with the organization Medlife, setting up a medical clinic to provide basic medical care and education to people in the poor and underserved communities surrounding Lima, Peru.…

Dewitt Jones’s video is very inspirational; it makes me want to tap into my creativity more. I really appreciate the way he defines creativity, emphasizing that anyone is able to be creative if they are willing to change their perspective. Similar to his early beliefs, when I was younger, I believed that only talented artists were creative and that creativity was not a trait that everyone could possess, especially not myself. As I have grown older, I have learned that all of us possess creativity, we just have to be willing to go the extra mile in order to access it.…

We are all the center of our own universes and busy living different lives that we sometimes forget that there are other people who are conscious, breathing, and living just as we do. Problems occur in everyone’s lives, big and small, and it’s very important that, even if we’ve never experienced anything like it, to look through each other’s eyes and understand. Problems are inevitable and some are worse than others. The lives of us Americans is like sleeping on Cloud-9 compared to those living in third world countries.
