Doug showed empathy to the family that came to get an MRI scan in the Scanner he designed, so he was able to feel the anxiety and stress faced by the parents and the children. They are the ones the hospital would use the machine on. Hence it is their satisfaction that is important to him. As a designer, I know that a designer feels the most satisfaction when their design serves its purpose in the best way it can and touches the lives of others in the process.
He was able to identify a major flaw in the design of the MRI scanner: Children were afraid of it! How are the doctors supposed to take the MRI if the child is unwilling to enter the scanner? Say they decide to sedate the child, it may help them to conduct the scan, but it also increases the risk of the child facing dangers. A drug overdose can cause serious problems. The parents have to carry the children and their concentration gets affected. He does this because he accepts that interior designing and children are not his forte, and realizes he needs help to solve his problem. The root cause of all the problems is that the environment and the design of the scanner scares children, so the best way to convince children is to get rid of their fear. Children have a wild imagination and can make worlds if you just give them enough Lego blocks. He redesigned the room and the MRI Scanner so that they look like places that are interesting to children and excite their imagination in a positive
