“The Other Wes Moore,” by Wes Moore is a memoir written to showcase how one choice can affect everything. This story follows two boys both growing up in Baltimore in similar households, and shows how one became a scholar/military figure and the other became a convicted murderer. Although some people may think otherwise, the author uses juxtaposition to convey the purpose of the book, which is to try to encourage people to make good decisions and that one choice can affect everything. One way the author shows the purpose is by looking at their different decision-making skills. In addition, the author’s decision-making skills tend to be more advanced, despite being two years younger than the other Wes.…

The quote ”A good nationalism has to depend on a principle of the common people, on the myths of a struggling commonality”express the fact that a nation is built on the coming together of common citizens as well as establishing a feeling of struggling. This feeling creates an environment where our society feels it must work hard to keep the nation together. Andrew O’Hagen has taken the reality of different nations in our world and has put them into one sentence. Andrew O'Hagen's view is one of that may be controversial due to the fact that it completely embraces the ideological factor of nationalism where a nation is defined under specific rules and not defined by the diversity of the citizens. A nation under his perspective may be considered more of an ethnic nation which is a nation where there is one common culture, race and religion compared to a civic nation where there a combination of cultures, races and religions.…

To further solidify the “Laramie Project” as CBA, however, there exists a model, called CRAFT, that some professionals use as guidelines to create effective community based art. Can CRAFT be found in the “Laramie…

In the essay titled “Ways of Seeing,” by John Berger, it is apparent that the author speaks to a higher class of academics that there is a subjective way people of today’s culture view things, including art. He contends that the socially accepted normality’s skew the perspective of the current generation and it is believed that there should be multiple ways of thinking instead of one. Though subtle at first glance, Mr. Berger uses the three key rhetorical strategies; logos, ethos, and pathos to develop a persuasive argument towards changing subjective observations. By tying in logical reason to support his claim, showing trustworthiness, and giving emotional persuasion, the Author uses all three rhetorical strategies to try and change certain subjective thinking.…

I completed this project during my fourth-year Honors’ seminar “Environment and Society”, taught by professor Rosales. Although this activity is not the typical creative arts portfolio artifact, I consider it to be relevant to the objective of this specific learning outcome. For this project, I decided to research art and the environment, more specifically the influence of the environment in the art and architecture of the Egyptian civilization. In this paper, I analyzed the flora, fauna, climate and other natural resources of ancient Egypt, and how those elements became pivotal in the creative expression of the civilization.…

Cultural Critique: Touching Strangers I chose to attend Richard Renaldi’s exhibit, Touching Strangers, for my cultural critique. I attended this exhibit on March 31, 2016 and it was located in the Foosaner Art Museum in Melbourne, Florida. This exhibit consisted of pictures taken of individuals with no interactions between the two or three of them prior to the photograph being taken (Gallery Guide, 2016). What was most interesting about this exhibit that attracted me to it was the name of it.…

Sam white and Hubert Lamb clearly demonstrate the effect of climate variability on human society in their respective works, “A Companion to Glob (Lamb)al Environmental History” and “Climate, History and the Modern World”. Climate variability has been a constant factor in human history since before history was written down. Climate variability came in the form of hotter, and colder periods. Hotter periods often manifested themselves in droughts that negatively impacted or destroyed food production in affected areas. The destruction of a region’s food supply often led to economic instability, political turbulence in the form of rebellions, and the spread of diseases among famine-stricken populations.…

Catharsis After Tragedy: How Kambo Can Be Used to Process Difficult Events When I first heard about the tragedy of the Ghost Ship warehouse fire in Oakland, California, my immediate fear was for the safety of my friends in the bay area. As I learned that my friends were safe, my heart went out to the victims and their friends and family. As the smoke settled, I began to feel a sense of fear and unieasiness regarding the future of the alternative art community in Oakland. Oakland is the home to countless live-work spaces that are each a critical aspect of the flourishing sense of community and artistry in the bay area. Like many of my friends, I wonder how this tragedy will affect other spaces and wonder what can be done to help the art community in Oakland.…
