Red Jacket’s drink was ready and she picked up her Venti sized pink drink. Two ladies in cardigans entered the store and walk up to read the menu boards. Black Cardigan looked old enough to be Tan Cardigan’s mom. Black Cardigan looked around as Tan Cardigan scanned her phone to pay. Now behind me, Black Cardigan told Tan Cardigan (“Michelle”) “it’s hereditary,” referring to a condition of someone they knew. Michelle then replied, “Oh, is it? I was wondering who on their side” had the condition they were talking about

As a way of being it seemed flat, failed to engage. When I was in fact a child, six and seven and eight years old, I was utterly baffled by the enthusiasm with which my cousin Brenda, a year and a half younger, accepted her mother’s definition of her as someone who needed to go to bed at six-thirty and finish every bite of three vegetables, one of them yellow, with every meal.
