Double sidedness is human nature. Therefore, novels of a variety of genres cover the subject of double sidedness. What is important is that the detective genre also covers this subject. As an example, this essay will analyze two detective series. The first is the well-known Sherlock Holmes and the other is Gojeonbu(A classic club) which centers around a club that studies classics. More precisely, two characters of each series will be analyzed in terms of the double sidedness concept. Detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Watson are the characters from the first selection. In the Gojeonbu series, detective Oreki Hotarou and heroine Chitanda Eru will be analyzed. To Holmes, Watson is a character who can show his extraordinaries. As in the expression; "You reasoned it out beautifully," I exclaimed, in unfeigned admiration. The light flashed upon the barrel of a revolver, but Holmes's hunting crop came down on the man's wrist, and the pistol clinked upon the stone floor.(The Red Headed League) Watson applaud Holmes` clearheadedness or Holmes shows his versatility while reveal the Watson`s incompetence. In conclusion, Holmes highlights Watson`s incompetence while Watson highlights Holmes` competentness. However, in other aspects, Watson is a controlling organ of Holmes. Like the preceding, Holmes is a great man but not a good man. He never minds using illegal methods, so he might become a criminal. In this point, Watson is who keeps Holmes becoming a criminal. As in the expression; I do not know whether he was seized with compunction at that moment for the part he was playing, but I know that I never felt more heartily ashamed of myself in my life than when I saw the beautiful creature against whom I was conspiring, or the grace and kindliness with which she waited upon the injured man.(A Scandal in Bohemia) Watson helps Holmes even if it is an illegal method. However, different from Holmes, he feels guilty about using these kinds of methods. His remaining guilty always draw line and keep themselves(Watson and Holmes) from becoming brutal criminals.
