Double Major Accomplishments

I would like to double major in Physics and Mathematics at Cornell. If I am to enter the field of Astronomy, a strong base of physics and mathematics is essential. Astronomy is a vast science, more precisely a subcategory of physics involving mathematical computations and interpretations. Being a double major is demanding for it comes with a lot of work, studying and research. Yet I chose both physics and mathematics for my Bachelor’s degree, as I wanted to lay a strong foundation to my goal of becoming an astrophysicist.

Being the youngest of my family with a science background, I have always enjoyed solving problems related to physics and mathematics. My inner passion for science, specifically astronomy, motivates me to explore new knowledge. When I was in high school, I was the president of the Astronomical Society. Together with my fellow members I organized observation sessions, mini lectures, and the first ever Astronomical Night of my school successfully. The experience I gained in these events inspired my goal of becoming an Astrophysicist.

It was not an easy task to work for sixteen hours per week while taking 16 credits, and earn 4.0 GPA at the same time. But the experience I gained in the process was invaluable. Tutoring helped me refresh my knowledge quite often, and share what I’ve learned. Every time I helped a student solve a problem and help them succeed, it gave me immense pleasure which cannot be translated into

Just last year I was driving up to LHU for the Summer Bridge program and I remember being extremely nervous because I didn’t know what to expect. I remember being assigned to a “Peer Mentor” whose job was to guide me throughout my freshman year and push me to be my best. I remember going to every workshop that was held on Thursdays at 12:30 p.m. because I knew if I didn’t there may be a possibility that I could miss out on some important information that would one day be helpful. I remember going to Dr. Gainer’s office every time I had a paper to write because I knew how helpful she was. To me, Astronomy is the science relative to space. It is the answer to very natural questions: the exploration of time and space. When I go and wonder about what there is above the sky, or what was there at the beginning, astronomy, through its different sections (such as planetary, cosmology etc…) helps me to answer this questions. I’m grateful to live in an age already advanced in this matter. However, there is so much more to explore, and so much more answer to find, and finding these answers is, according to me, what astronomy means.…

I knew from a young age that teaching was what I was meant to do. Shadowing a teacher for a day in eight grade cemented for me that I was going to be a teacher. While the age of the student I was wanting to teach has changed as I've gotten older that drive to teach has never left. Working as an Educational Assistant at St. Louis Community College has only poured gasoline on that fire and passion for teaching. I can no longer put off pursuing my education to become a mathematics professor.…

Another situation where I felt that I succeed as a tutor, was during June. A student that I regularly tutored named Cody, was studying for his drama exam. This student expressed to me that he was not extremely interested in drama and only took it to get his art credit. From talking with him I got the impression that he would be challenging to work with, and would have a difficult time memorizing his lines. Although, I found through isolating him to keep him on track and using a certain approached to helping him learn his lines he was very successful; even nailing all the pauses and accent.…

In this chapter you have an introduction to Astronomy. Astronomy is the study of the universe investigating the position, movement, composition, properties, physical states, and evolution of celestial objects. Astrology is not a science that determines your future based on the alignment of the planets at the moment of birth. The difference between these two is that Astronomy is a science and can be scientifically proven. Astrology is not a science and can’t be scientifically proven.…

I have chosen to apply to the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, given my dream is to become a physicist. For my bachelor's degree, I wish to major in physics and minor in astronomy, thus making this particular college directly advantageous to my pursuits and interest. My fascination with science and the cosmos began at a very young age as I was always questioning the beliefs I was taught. Having been raised in an ultra-orthodox Jewish home, many of these beliefs contradicted with the reality of the cosmos presented by the scientific community. These issues were explained away however I had trouble believing many of the answers I was given as they seemed to lack common sense.…

At times, trying to picture a mathematical problem in the real world is better solved by using abstract math. Ed Yong from National Geographic states that “when learning math, abstract symbols work better than real world examples” due to important logical thinking skills learned (2008). Learning theory is considered how well a person can relate a topic and solve the problem at an understandable quicker rate. According to National Geographic, there was a new study that shows that students who are “fed a diet of real-world problems fail to apply their knowledge to new situations” (2008). On the other hand, “against all expectations, they were much more likely to transfer their skills if they were taught with abstract rules and symbols” (Yong,…
