For this week’s topic, I chose to write about the double day system within the EU, with Estonia in mind. The concept of the double day captures the idea that women who work outside their homes must also perform the daily household's duties as well. In Estonia, approximately 28-30% of women have paying jobs and perform the normal household duties. Whereas, men work normal 40 hr /wk. jobs, but do not help out as much around the house. According to our text, “Women burdened by double day generally operate with somewhat less efficiency in a paying job… they also choose employment that is closer to home… [with] more flexible jobs(often erroneously classified as part time) [that] almost always offer lower pay and less opportunity for advancement….”
