She was the youngest offspring of a household consisting of six siblings. There were three male siblings and two female siblings. It was when she was a child that she first started working out. In an effort to alleviate her "sore body," she engaged in intense weightlifting because she believed it would help. Her height had increased to well over 6 feet by the time she was in the eighth grade. When she was in middle school, she began participating in track and field events, and she began competing in strength competitions at a relatively young age. While Jones was a student at Hilmar High School, she emerged victorious in the weight lifting competition and was honoured as the female athlete of the year. At the age of 19, she won her first world championship in arm wrestling. She went on to win 14 more championships in the sport. She began arm wrestling on a whim during her teenage years. Following her graduation from Hilmar High School, Jones continued her engagement in athletics while attending Fresno State and Modesto Junior College. She received a scholarship for her track and field performance, which allowed her to pay for her education at both junior college and university. Jones participated in a variety of athletic events, including powerlifting, shot put, and softball. She was the state champion in 1983 and 1984, and she set the national record for the shot put at the junior college level from 1983 to 1990. She was awarded All-America honours in the shot throw as well as at the university level. Jones competed in the shot put event at the United States Olympic Trials in 1988 and made it to the sixth place
