Dorthea Lange Essay

I went in to watch Dorthea Speaks with absolutely no expectations. I did not know who Dorthea Lange was, the name was somewhat familiar to me, but alas, I did not have any ideas on what I was going to watch. With that said, I thoroughly enjoyed the film. It was very well put together. The film told Dorthea’s story in a way that emphasized her skill as a photographer. This was never said outright, but the visuals throughout most of the story were photographs she had taken. I think that this was an excellent way to emphasize this without outright boasting. I believe it was far more effective than many other techniques that could have been used. Near the beginning of the film, San Francisco was the setting of the story. Several photographs of …show more content…
Seeing some of the photographs and putting a meaning behind them was very influential on my perception of Dorothea Lange. Of course, I had seen many of her photographs, but seeing them through her eyes was an interesting experience for me. I found certain photographs informative of the times. Others, I found descriptive of something larger. Some were even beautiful. It felt to me that many of her photographs were taken for a specific purpose. Seeing her focus her camera on specific things, in specific ways, for a specific shot was eye opening to …show more content…
It has divided into two parts in my mind. Part one is where she was at home and was photographing things close to the home. Things like the trees in her back yard, and her family became her muses. She focused on things she had neglected throughout her life. Unless I am mistaken, I feel like these were important subjects to her at this point in her life. She wanted them to know that she did love them, even though she had spent her entire life photographing other places and things. The second part, for me, was her traveling phase. She went with Paul all over the world. Her photography was lessened by her low energy levels and the fact that she was working as a tourist rather than a professional photographer. These photographs had a different tone than the rest of her

There is much to be learned from analyzing Dorothea Lange’s photograph “Migrant Mother” and the article relating to it by Kevin Starr. The photograph shows a poor migrant family and how the conditions they have been living through have begun to wear them down. The article gives more personal information on the family, ones you wouldn’t have been able to get from the photo, like how the mother’s name was Florence Thompson and that, “...they had been living on frozen vegetables from surrounding fields, and birds that the children killed” (Starr 2). After the photo was released, many criticized Lange for focusing on the issue behind the photo and not the people in it since she hadn’t even asked for the name of the woman she photographed. After…

.I have learned that the Migrant family is that they would sometimes starve because they were living off frozen vegetables and birds that the children would kill. I agree that she it was a good idea to photograph her family from a detached perspective because if she didn't they would have had to wait more time. They would take more time on investigating who she was. Dorothea Lange at least knew were she was located which was at "Pea Pickers Camp" in Nipomo. In my opinion I don't think knowing her name would help in any reason because she still had evidence of how they were living.…

Plath then mocks her audience on the premise of their shameless interest in her saved suicide attempt, similar to the attitude of many who view the Holocaust concentration camps with awe and detachment. She relates that those who come to see her after her suicide attempts do not really care about her, they only want to see the horrific event that occurred from a safe distance. She relates back to Germany when she introduces the character of “Herr Doktor” in lines 64-72. “Herr” is the German word for Mister, and “Doktor” the German word for doctor. She ridicules the doctor for not truly caring about her mental health, just like the audience, but only wanting to put on a show for those who standby to watch.…

In Heda Gabler and A Doll’s House, both female protagonists are in very similar, yet also differing situations in their lives and relationships with the people in them. Heda Gabler and Nora exemplify two different women living in different places but who find themselves in similar, repressed situations given the time periods of the plays and the roles of females in society. Though their situations are comparable in terms of their expectations and longings in their lives, the two women have very different ends. Character relationships and points of plot intermingle in the plays, as both are written by Henrik Ibsen, but the women chose different paths at the end of the plays. Both women long for something great, for fulfillment of…
