Dorothy Locker Room-Personal Narrative

Improved Essays
“I’m probably going to hate her.” My hushed voice spoke to the person beside me. The Dorothy braids and long legs shifted slowly across the locker room. “I hate you!” Two years later and it was two AM. The smell of honey, vanilla extract, and butter wafted through my kitchen at 2 am as the Dorothy braids struggled to watch me attempt to whisk the mixture. “She’s probably a prep.” My eyes lightly pierced her pink blouse. “Gross.” “You’re going to let me borrow that.” POW! was printed across the thick grey fabric she held in her hands. I find it funny how someone you begin hating can end up being your biggest influence, and best friend. Soft rays awoke me on the brown couch. The house - still unfamiliar to all of my senses, was inactive.

The Bright light gleamed upon my shining face as the cameraman closed in the frame of me, the microphone hovering above the camera; the visual image in my mind of the magical world this movie was creating, the director hollered “Ready, Set, Action!” words that forever changed my life for the better. Shirley Jane Temple is what my mother named me when I was born on April 23, 1928 in my hometown of Santa Monica, California. From here on I grew slowly but steadily. The author learns the difference between "natural" and "artificial," and shows how chemical flavors such as Methyl anthranilate (one of the first artificial flavors; smells like grapes), created by "flavorists," has become a billion dollar industry and has transformed our eating habits as consumers. He explains that many of the natural and artificial flavors today are made in the same factories, but for some reason, consumers view natural flavor as healthier and are willing to pay a higher price for related products. The author uses statistical data (logos) cited from studies performed by the Institute of Food Research to prove the point that the "manipulation of smell" contributes to the majority of what people claim…
