Dorothy Day Role Model

Great Essays
As a society, we try to see good in people wherever we are. Our societal norm is constructed and based on the common good and working for others not because we have to but because we want to and need change. I have come to learn and admire now one of my favorite social justice icon that has worked for the poor and by the poor for a change in the social justice system. Dorothy Day (1897-1980), started her life as a simple journalist. For her time, she was considered as a very outgoing and a straight forward person. She was an activist for the poor and believed in direct assistance of the poor. At such very young age, she became a journalist and started working with different people. Ultimately, this has led her to experience different circumstances …show more content…
Groody wrote that Maurin had three main points that he wanted the movement to consist on. The points include, “Round-table discussion, house of hospitality for the practice of the works of mercy and, agronomic universities or farmers and scholars worked together” (167). These points are crucial because of them, both Day and Maurin were able to assist the poor that were over looked by others. The catholic Worker Movement to this day serves the community by using Dorothy day’s principle of aid. Her co-founder Peter Maurin is also one of the most admired icons that has walked on this earth. Because of their actions, these two individuals are and will forever be used as an inspiration as well as a symbol of …show more content…
Although I am not involved in the things she used to encounter every day, the very first thing I realized and learned after reading about her life story is to never underestimate anyone and everyone. Personally, I think she is the definition of courage. She was probably judged negatively throughout her life. She has defied the odds of a woman at her time bringing a drastic change to the system and condition the poor were living in. Her life has taught me not to judge anyone by the style they live in but by the actions they take. Just by looking at her, people have certain opinions of her and her past life however, that is not all Dorothy Day. She is more than peoples’ opinion and has done much more for the common good of the

The religious and spiritual activist Dorothy Day had a passion for writing. She combined these passions by founding the Catholic Worker, a mixture of journalistic reports, editorials, diaries, and meditations. Day’s “Memorial Day in Chicago” was a journalistic report that is meant to persuade readers to take a stand and advocate for peace. She places guilt on the audiences as she pleads everyone to become their own activist. She accomplishes these by first asking us questions, then placing our own judgments on other countries to our own, next she moves into establishing credibility on the topic, later she shows us where people fall to place the blame, and lastly she directs her writing to Christ.…

She had many regrets about her life, but I feel that she did great things for our country even through her many struggles. She went through many hard times, but she did not allow them to bring her down. She grew stronger through the hard times that she endured. She was definitely an introvert, but she made an outward transformation.…

In society, an action of an individual or group often has a consequence that not only affects them, but others in society as well. Through action, society is able to progress and mend to the people’s ever changing beliefs and values. No one in history is remembered for what they did not do, but rather what they did do and how it affected society. For example, Harriet Tubman and the NAACP went down in history for their work in improving the lives of African-Americans and fighting to change the standards of society during their time, showing that acts of kindness can have a positive effect on society. Harriet Tubman is a prime example that certain acts of kindness can help society improve and advance.…

When one hears the term radicalism in the context of religion, the first image that appears for most is of radical Islam, specifically the terrorist organizations that have manifested themselves over the course of the twentieth and twenty-first century. However, these recent events have tarnished the term “radical” to mean a dangerous ideology. Bringing this term back to its literal meaning, Dorothy Day in her novel Loaves and Fishes discusses her radical philosophy known as the Catholic Worker Movement. She seeks to, in essence, go back to the roots of how Christ lived and foster a community of compassion that prides itself in poverty.…

Iconic Ms. Dorothy Day: Preface” There are fewer people that could recognize a problem or issue that plagues our society; contained by reason, internalize the situation without benefiting personally, answering and muster up the fortitude to attempt a solution. This notion was embodied by Ms. Dorothy Day. All around us are passionate, loving and concerned human beings, but almost never to a fault. Some people’s sacrifices are pretentious and selfish due to the fact that the person(s) sacrifice is for a friend, relative or acquaintance. To Dorothy, it didn’t matter because she helped everyone.…
