The first example of the application of Orem’s theory was found in a long-term care nursing home setting. The study looked at the effects on the perspectives of staff caring for the nursing home residents when the theory was applied to nursing assessment and patient care goals. In this study, researchers were concerned with the inadvertent reinforcing of patient dependence and indifference through nursing interventions and the resulting inability of the patients to maintain their self-care abilities (Faucett, Ellis, Underwood, Naqvi, & Wilson, 1990). The two and a half year study involved an experimental and a control group of floor nurses in which clinical nurse specialists worked to implement the SCDNT model for the experimental group. The implementation of the model included teaching and workshops, modification of the language in the documentation, and clarification of nursing roles based on the model. The most significant findings in this study exemplified in the experimental group, showed improved fostering of independence in patient care goals whereas the control group’s goals continued to reinforce dependence on nursing …show more content…
The study was driven by Australia’s public health approach calling for consumers to be more active participants in their health care and indicating the need for the older population to have improved representation within healthcare systems (Glasson, et al., 2006). The goal of this study was to evaluate healthcare outcomes after implementation of SCDNT model into the nursing plan of care. The results focused on were activities of daily living (ADL’s) capabilities, knowledge level of medication regimens, and overall perceived patient and nurse satisfaction with nursing care activities. This study using mixed methods of data collection compared a pre-model and model group of patients and nurses. The findings indicate a significant improvement in all three realms of outcomes from within the model group as a result of the SCDNT model
