The imagery summons the viewer to put themselves in the context of the artwork, making them consider theirs and their families lives in the event of the Great Depression. This photograph displays the troubles that the people living in America felt at the time, where an average mother had so much to worry about; like whether her and her children had food and shelter. The art piece depicts the suffering and unfortunate conditions of the nation. As Dorothea Lange once said, “the camera is an instrument that teaches people how to see without a camera.” (Lange, n.d.) In this case, fortunately enough, people were able to see the message of Lange’s photography; when Lange contacted the editor of the San Francisco newspaper, presenting two of her photographs. The editor then informed federal authorities, while publishing an article on Lange’s artwork of the plight that workers faced during this period. The outcome of this was the government sending a shipment of 20,000 lbs
