In the twenty-first century we have become ingrained in a culture through which McDonaldized systems (through rules, regulations and scripts), have ultimately come to threaten the ability of those involved to think intelligently (Ritzer, 1998). It is clearly dehumanizing to find oneself mindlessly functioning like a robot within corporately structured systems. Chipotle's advertisement (2013), promotes themselves as a company that has been able to detach from the demanding, hegemonic structure, which further promotes an image of the company that is not “real” or “true”. McDonaldization of the food industry and the lack of control a person has over what is in the food they eat has created a runaway juggernaut.…

Specifically, at the start of the ad, the face of Peter Dinklage is blacked out and a spotlight is deliberately aimed at the bag of Doritos the actor is holding. This is an effective use of ethos because once the audience member spots the bag, they will recognize the brand. Not only does the brand recognition play into the ads sense of ethos, but so does Peter Dinklage himself. Dinklage is a well known actor and his appearance in this ad may further persuade the audience that they should buy Doritos. Throughout this advertisement, each celebrity feature is intertwined and this significantly helps the appearance and flow of the video.…

Population growth in the United States during the late 19th century proved to be a pivotal point for many Native Americans—they had to decide whether to conform to the very different lifestyle of the whites or isolate themselves from a rapidly advancing society. In the 19th century, it was widely believed that Native Americans could not adapt to modernity and would vanish. Although this proved untrue, many sources cast a doubtful light on the ability of their Native American counterparts. In fact, half of the documents displayed the whites’ dubiousness for Native Americans. However, much to the delight of historians, the other half of the documents correctly asserted that Native Americans were capable of adaptation and modernization.…

Realistically, I think the case could give more in depth background on the Doritos Company and how it led to the point where they need fan submissions for a commercial. However I do believe that is adequate and just by reading it I gained the general understanding of what was the background of this case. The major reason for conducting this program was to try and beat out Budweiser rating for the best super bowl commercial, while also trying to get more fan participation in the company. It seems that this commercial program was more reactive because it stems from Budweiser having the best commercial at the super bowl every year, and because of this Doritos wanted to fire back with a way to beat them out. I think they targeted the right audiences;…
