Dorian's House: A Narrative Fiction

“Fine with me ….” Alex grinned as she went down the porch steps. Sitting in the backseat next to Dorian was exactly where she wanted to be.

This is why art’s role in society is to allow an artist to communicate a message and express beliefs, so the audience can create their own interpretation of the art and therefore reflect their own nature in the work. However, Oscar Wilde was a prominent figure in opposing these ways of life with his flamboyant appearance and contempt for cultural values. The novella Carmilla is much more complicated in its message and connection to queerness within the horror genre. On the surface there is a kind of innocence in the relationship that Laura and Carmilla share. It doesn’t seem to go much beyond light physical intimacy, but the scenes are described in a romantic way by the Laura, such as when she states of Carmilla, “And when she had spoken such rhapsody, she would press me more closely in her trembling embrace, and her lips in soft kisses gently glow upon my cheek” (LeFanu). The relationship is a double-edged sword in that while it does seem sweet and romantic, Laura is essentially used by Carmilla, and Carmilla takes the role of a predator of women.…

The gothic novels The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and The Turn of the Screw by Henry James share the idea of corruption, but in different ways; The Picture of Dorian Gray tells the story of moral corruption and extreme narcissism while The Turn of the Screw tells of corruption of innocence, though the effects of corruption are the same in both novels. Wilde used Lord Henry Wotton in The Picture of Dorian Gray to represent the forces of corruption in the novel (Nethercot 850). Dorian Gray, initially introduced to the reader as pure…

In the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, we are faced with a pallet of characters, all whom are very dynamic and have clear ambitions. Up until Chapter 6, we are given the idea that Dorian Gray is a generally normal man. He shows no sign of abnormality, he is simply a man with rather good looks and he has an immense interest in Lord Henry’s philosophical way of thinking. The first real event in which the reader can either justify Dorian’s actions as good or bad is located in Chapter 7 after he has brought Basil Hallward and Lord Henry to see the girl that he is in love with, Sibyl Vane, preform at the theatre. Following the second act of the play, Basil and Lord Henry leave the theatre, displeased by her performance, with Lord Henry making the comment, “‘She is quite beautiful, Dorian,” he said, “but she can 't act.…
