After the meal is over, Dorian, dressed in fine furs, walks home in the fog. On the walk home, he sees Basil on the street. He tries to avoid him, but fails. Basil catches up. Basil says that he has been hoping to talk to Dorian. They both go back to Dorian’s house. Basil says that he is worried about what is being said about Dorian. He says that bad things are happening to people who choose to be friends with Dorian – people losing their jobs, social standing, or worse. Dorian doesn’t care, and is only interested in himself. Dorian then decides to show Basil what has happened to his portrait, because either nobody will believe Basil is telling the truth, or if they do believe Basil, they will only admire Dorian more for it. Dorian rips off the cover of the painting and Basil is shocked by how ugly it has become. He tries to think about how it might have gotten that way. Dorian reminds Basil about that day in his studio, and the wish he made. Basil tells Dorian that he needs to pray and repent. Dorian, overcome with a sudden anger, stabs Basil until he is dead. Dorian doesn’t feel anything. He then starts to cover up his crime. Dorian goes outside and rings his doorbell until his valet answers. He checks in with him and asks if anyone has visited. The valet says that Basil had visited, but left. Afterwards in the library, Dorian writes down the address of Allen
