Doree was not even able to choose friends. When Doree befriended Maggie this was a huge threat to Lloyd, and Doree knew this. Doree was constantly in fear that Lloyd would forbid her friendship with Maggie. And, she felt she had to be careful about what she said around Maggie because “She saw that there were things that she was used to that other person might not understand.”p13 Although Lloyd was repeatedly emotionally, mentally, and physically abusive to Doree she remained loyal to him.
