Originally a subcamp of camp Buchenwald, Dora was used for the construction of tunnels and a large industrial complex into the Harz Mountain. There were two main tunnels each running 1,800 meters long and branching off into 46 smaller tunnels. These tunnels were built by the prisoners, who were brought from camp Buchenwald. The large industrial complex was also built by the prisoners. The complex was used to house and produce missiles and weapons used by the Nazis in World War 2. In the beginning of 1944 the Nazis began the production of the V2 missile to use against the Axis powers.
Dora was a work camp. Dora officially became an independent camp on October 10, 1944 with a population of about 60,000 prisoners.Dora eventually had 30 subcamps of its own. A few ways were severe beating, starvation, and physical and mental torture. Also convicts to weak or ill were sent to other camps ( Auschwitz and Mauthausen) Dora had a higher death rate compared to other work camps. Dora had such a high death rate because, the prisoners were kept underground deprived of fresh air and sunlight. When the Allied powers began attacking(early April), the Nazis began to evacuate the camp. They began by killing off the weak, then they had the stronger ones go on a death march.
